>You took out a total of 7 bolts right?
>you disconnected the shifter rod at top?
>does it not budge at all from the center housing?
>you tapped on the ridge area gently with a dead-blow or rubber hammer?
>it may not just 'fall down', the water tube and exhaust grommet will add some resistance.

**if 7 bolts removed, and doesn't drop down some.......maybe driveshaft rusted into crank(I meant crank rusted onto driveshaft)
>did you try twisting it to see if is broke free from the center housing?

Schematic,

Thanks for the input.

I took out a total of 6 bolts. 2 each side, one forward and one near the trim tab.

Power end is off so all I see on the top is drive shaft and shifter rod with a knuckle joint. Not sure if I need to do anything to this ??

I have smacked it loads with wood and a hammer. A slight gap has appeared between the faces but it wont budge. I thought I have left a bolt in but I can't see a thing and I have searched. Maybe it is the selector but that is just free at the top. Does the whole selector shaft come out when the lower unit is removed ?

The engine was running recently so I don't suspect rust.

NG

Did you remove the trim tab and look inside the cavity for another bolt? If its OMC you'll find one there! Don't just remove the bolt near the tab, thinking thats it in the back.
Just read your other post. That should be it then, at this point the only thing left would be a stuck driveshaft.

MikeM2's got it.....you've still got a bolt holding that thing on. With the powerhead off, there's nothing else that could hold it on. ;)
Backlash

Yea, Backlash, isn't the powerhead the other side of the driveshaft? There's nothing left!!!

NGRIFF1,
Sounds like you are having the same problem I've been having for 3 weeks now. I got all the bolts out of my Evinrude 200, But lower unit still would not come off. Finally found out the shaft was stuck in the powerhead. After several attempts and methods I have the lower unit off- but guess what the pin that holds the shaft in the lower unit broke and the shaft is still stuck in the powerhead! my boat has been used primarily in salt water and I am told the shaft would corrode and "weld" itself in the powerhead. I wish you luck if this is the case with your motor. I am probably going to re-power (my motors are 11 years old)
Craig ;)

Re: Heeeelp any engine mechanics

Gents,

Superb work. If only I had looked harder. I found the bolt under the trim tab as suggested.

I did have to remove the knuckle off the selector shaft befire the lower unit would withdraw.

Now for the 100 dollar question.

How do I do this on my "live" engine on my boat. The spare engine had no power head so it was relatively easy. I can't see me being able to get to the knuckle joint to disconnect it.

When I do put the spare lower unit on I plan to replace the water pump and exhause gasket. Anything else I should do.

Thanks again.

Much appreciate the help guys.

NG

NGRIFF1 That knuckle looking thing that you see that holds the shift shaft has too be loosened. That in order drops the shift shaft loose. It is a little bit to get to but with a swivel socket it can be done. Try this and hope it works for you.

Good luck
Nick

Craig
Thanks, I will try. I presume the knuckle is accessable in the lower part of the power head. I probably have to remove the side panels to see it.

I presume there is a recommended gasket set I need to buy ?

NG

Easiest way i think is to remove the lowest carb. Only takes a few minutes, and makes it a lot easier to get to the bolt. :)

Gents,

All done and dusted.

The easiest way to remove the lower unit is to remove the side panels and the gear selector is easily accessible.

Thanks for all your help.

The next posting will test out the electical experts in you. My rev counter doesn't work..

Thanks again. I am impressed by this forum.

NG
