Re: Hello all 1st post need some help

Welcome to iboats.

RUN AWAY!!! I would not touch that even it was free.

You could not give me that boat and $200 cash I would walk away.

Obsolete motor and parts. Everything appears to be in poor condition.

Re: Hello all 1st post need some help

if that astroflight were on the east coast, i think i'd own in by tomorrow night.

there's lots of boats out there, stealth. you can find one worth fixing for close to the same money. first off, figure what you're going to do most. where you're going to use it.

cheap is good, valuable is better. fixing these can get real expensive real fast. ask any of us. we've got receipts to prove it. (i'm trying to declare mine as a dependant.)

ask a lot of questions before you plunk down legal tender.

swing by you library, or spend an afternoon at the local bookstore researching what to look for. then ask a lot more questions.

welcome aboard!

Re: Hello all 1st post need some help

Thanks much Guys I'll stay clear of the Glastron LOL. What I'm looking for is a small fishing boat 14-16' that will seat 4 people. I would like it to be a fairly "sporty" boat that I can just cruise the lake if I like. No need to pull a skier or anything. And yes I'm kinda looking for something in the $500 range I'm fairly handy so I can fix most things. The Glastron just caught my eye because of the size and the V4 2 stroke but if there are no parts available I do not want it.

Thanks Much

Re: Hello all 1st post need some help

Kris, condition is everything when buying a used boat. If you can get a family member or friend who is an experienced boater/boat owner to look at this boat, together you should be able to determine if it has been abused or neglected. The engine is an OMC V4, two-stroke, watercooled, outboard powerhead mounted with the crankshaft horizontal and mated to an OMC outdrive. OMC has been out of business for a few years but they made many millions of those type motors and parts are still available. BRP still maintains the parts lists and diagrams back to 1968 models although some parts are NLA. It needs more research to be sure but my guess is the horsepower is 90-120. The most valuable part may be the cogged belt that drives the distributor (it has an automotive-style ignition system). Other forum members have posted that parts for the outdrive are getting very scarce and qualified technicians are even scarcer. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

We were posting at the same time but I also wanted to add that from the pictures, it appears that the outdrive has an electric shift gearcase. I think they are great when they work but the price of parts, if available, is a real downer.

Re: Hello all 1st post need some help

I was going to say that I've seen those with outboard powerheads mated to an I/O platform.

I think that would end up being a HUGE project, but it is a neat looking boat...it does catch the eye.

If you are new to boating, go with something that is going to be a little easier to maintain and operate.

The boat with the fiberglass surround on the trailer has the cool factor totally built into it. I dig it!:D

Re: Hello all 1st post need some help

Thanks willy. If the boat ran good it would be a nice collector and eye catcher. I may still look at it but I need to sell mine for parts before I do anything for sure. I bought a boat last year and it has a cracked block but the outdrive is still good. Merc 165

Can't find a replacement motor for it? That should cost you about the same as a different boat with different problems if you get a used motor...

Is that the greatly dreaded L-drive?

OK from Kevs list boat number 1 3 -4 pictures of Mr. Franklin will take that one home and it looks like a sweet deal . Number 2 I have that same boat in the same condition I gave $100 for it and then the guy got a used AC unit from me for $400.00 :D. Boat number 4 can be had for $600 if its cash easy . My pics 1 or 4 cant call 3 as it appears to be sold already :D.

Re: Hello all 1st post need some help

Welcome to the forum stealth:), I agree with Rick...I'd get the 18' with the 115 Evinrude for $400, talk him down from 500. I'd say that trailer looks good, if the engine runs it's a steal.

If you want to have 3-4 people on her then you will like the 18' for the extra room and stability. Also the 115 would be fun to wheel around with:D If you(or your passengers) end up wanting to ski or tube that setup would be more than adequate.

Re: Hello all 1st post need some help

Thanks for the replies Guys!! Much appreciated!! The reason I was looking beyond the 165 is I was told it had to be a marine block because of the way it mounted in the boat? If that's not the case I may still look at finding a chevy 250/292 block. What do you guys think?

Thanks
Kris

Post that exact question in the I/O Forum and maybe some of the experts like Don S and Ziggy will provide you some clear direction. Good luck!
