Hello this is my first post here. After being away from boating for about 15 years, I'm back. A 12.75 lb. Bass caught from the bank of a local lake in December, has MADE me buy a boat. I have a very used Fisher Marine boat with an electric start Johnson 1976, 25 HP. I took the boat out today, and after getting back home,I noticed oil coming from a round hole directly behind the lower unit gear oil upper plug. I did change the gear oil before I went boating today. Can anyone tell me what this hole is for and should I be concerned ??

Thanks

More than likely a drain hole for water to escape the lower unit after pulling it out of the water. That way it doesn't freeze during the winter. What you are likely seeing is unburned exhaust residue coming out of the hole. Nothing to be concerned about. If you are concerned, drain the lower unit fluid and check it to make sure there is no water intrusion in it.(Milky Looking)

have to understand this. You caught a 12 3/4 lb. bass fishing from the bank, and went out and bought a boat to go afer the really big ones??

inclined to think the leakage isn't an issue. I often get some seeping after running my motors (water, oil, exhaust carbon) from various spots on the leg and lower unit, and simply check the oil level now and then to see if it's milky or the quantity is low.
