Hello everyone.! Not sure how to set up my signature on this forum yet. Sorry! Iv searched around a bit. But did not find my answer. I separated the out drive on my 2000 216 ssi chap 5.7 L Volvo penta SX out drive. To Check every thing out and grease the shaft and U joints. And put new O - rings... Every thing was in good condition. .... But I noticed there was no gasket between the outdrive and transom housing. Is there suppose to be one? i only got two O rings and water intake o ring in the packet I orderd.

Photobucket works good, just use the IMG code and post here.

For photo and other things about the site use this link.

There are several options if you don't want to use photo bucket. If you open photos and select a picture you'll see a square box with an arrow up on the bottom left. By selecting the box you can send the photos using airdrop or any other applications. If you use google mail application you can attach a picture from your collection and send it to yourself. There are many ways. Apple just don't make it obvious.

Well since I was asking about the outdrive housing seal, I got a couple more questions to confirm. !! Let me just say Iv never owned a boat. Until last year I picked this one up. The man I bought it from said the engine of as replaced brand new 4 years ago. And it looks new and starts an runs like a champ. I don't know if the manifolds and risers were replaced when new engine installe was done. ""I did not ask because I knew nothing of boats when purchasing "". But the paint on them looks in geat condition and no rust at gaskets. I understand their function and importance. Keeping them full of fresh water in the season along with the block and pumps are the best way to slow rust. "No oxygen ". Is that correct?? I should be Abel to touch the risers at full operating temps. With out burning my hand. This means the inside rust / corrosion is minimum.?? "This only a fresh water boat never seen salt water". Ok.., now to the bellows. I understand there are two of them, one for exhaust with is the lower one with slits cut in the bottom of it., Then there is the u- joint / gimbel bearing bellow upper one that I can't see. The drive has to come off to inspect it for cracks and tears. ?? Correct? This is extremely important one. I took the outdrive apart to grease shaft and installed new o- rings and there were no signs of water or rust. All was good and I greased the gimbel bearing. sooo. I'm I correct with what I understand so far.? And how many hours of operation do most folks grease the gimbel bearing. Thanks in advance!!

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... If yer boatin' in sweetwater, 'n not brine, exhaust manifolds, 'n risers virtually Never rot out,....
They're more apt to get busted from not drainin' 'em in freezin' conditions,...

The ones on my houseboat are 40 years old, 'n like new,....

Don't worry 'bout Rust, it's a non-issue,....

The tops of the risers can, 'n will get very uncomfortable to the hand, but not so hot as to fry the skin, on contact,.....

As for the bellows,... ya, ya had the drive off, if the bellows was holed, you'da found water in there when ya pulled the drive,....

Ok cool , thank you for that help of understanding what I think I know about the boat. I'll pull the drive once a season and check it all out and the u - joints - bellows , aliment , gimbal bearing , ECT...
To make sure no cracks or holes and its nice and flexible. It's great to know the manifolds and risers aren't such a problem if not in salt water. I will follow the winterizing sticky on this forum. And all should be good. Iv done all the regular things of yearly maintance that I can find in my service/ repair manual
That I can find. But I'm sure I'll have more questions as o go along. Thanks again!!

I find it very strange that water don't leak in to the drive shaft bellow with no rubber seal at the bell housing. I didn't pay much attention to it when I separated it to check gimbel bearing and lube splines. But next time I'm going to take a good look at how that thing seals with out a gasket of some sort.

The bellows is what seals the thing. The neck of the outdrive is sealed by the smooth rubber portion of the bellows boot.

If you don't know how old the u-joint bellows are, change it. You should be changing it every 5 years. Store the drive in the down position to keep the bellows in a more relaxed state.

Ok thank senior b. I
Have a way better understanding now. The u joint bellow is still
In great condition nice a flex able. And stuck a little mirror up in there with a
Light to make sure it was all good condition. Then Iv sprayed some tire wet all up in there on it soaked it around the claims areas to keep it conditioned not to dry out so fast. And yea I've been keeping stored in the down position. Thank you guys. Been learning a lot here so far.

Tire conditioners are pretty much worthless and may actually hurt the bellows. Just keep them dry and replace every 5 years.

Ok. I won't put any more on em. If you guys say it's worthless and
Potentially damage the rubber. I had no ideal. Iv found some decent " ok " vids on changing them along with the gimbel bearing. But if anyone has a link to one that is a great step by step with tools that will be needed. That would be awesome.

I'm guessing that silicone tire shine actually drys out the rubber?
