Greetings everyone. I new here and fairly new to outboards. I had recently traded a fishing rod for a 1953-54 super fastwin 15.

It came with a tank, had spark and compression. I was surprised that when I started it in the tank it fired up on the 2nd pull and was spitting water. It came with gas in the tank, but don't know the mixture of the gas. I didn't want to push it because the throttle linkage had broke and figured it would have emptied the tank if I cranked her up.

After I pulled the carb off, and notices it was ejaculate clean for a motor that had been sitting for years. Even inside the firing chamber. I'm thinking it was rebuilt.

My questions are, can I use the ear muff things instead of a tank on this beast?

Is the fuel mix 24:1 like I've read elsewhere on this forum? People have told me to use 40:1 or 50:1 but with a motor that seems to have been rebuilt I would think what ever the factory recomended.

I think I hit the jack pot on this thing, the fishing rod I traded I actually caught while sturgeon fishing. I ordered the parts for the steering linkage, and they are on the way. I have a 12' smoker craft I was thinking get on using it on, but thing it might be to big.

Any info would be great, I'm fairly new to outboards.

24-1 would be the mix. You have to use a tank for that motor as the water intake is behind the prop.

Welcome to the wonderful world of antique/vintage outboards!

there are muffs that you can use, but they are rare and hard to find, due to the water inlet as noted. best to run in a barrel.

Don't ruin it with a lean mix, use the 24:1 mentioned.

I would change the gear oil, with new crush washers.

Change the water pump impeller, they should be done every 3 to 4 years, and if you are not sure when it was last done, do it for peace of mind. They are not expensive.

Have the coils already been done? If they are original, they will fail under load. They crack with age. There will be an inspection port on top of the flywheel. Take the recoil off, 3 screws, then have a look see in. You will know if they are junk by looking at them.

have fun with it!

Thanks for the replies. This is a wonderful motor and I will replace all that before I run her to on the water.
The guy I got it from got it with the boat he bought (whaler style gamefisher). It sat in his chicken coupe for a couple months and sat on that boat for several years.

Looking for a little larger boat for it. Eyeing a wooden 14' skiff in a neighbors driveway. Would be a great match.

Got a Ted Williams 7.5 for the 12' smoker craft.

What kind of oil do you recommend for the lower unit? I really need to spring for a repair manuel.

Regular 80-90 weight outboard motor gear oil. The original manual probably says 90 weight automotive Hypoid oil. Today's outboard gear oil is an improvement.
