First of all I would like to say hello and I have already seen where this site is full of valuable information. Ok here I go, I have a 25 ft southbay sl tri toon with what they call the performance package. I have a Yamaha 150 on it as well. The first thing is I wana go faster! With my family of 4 we can hit 32mph on the gps. Also when I trim the motor up a little over half way on the trim gauge the motor over revs. I also was wondering if it is normal for the motor to shoot a roster tail on both sides of the motor? It just seems like the rear of the pontoon has a lot of drag . Is this normal. I know I rambled on here and probley lost a few of y'all but any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Your speed is about right. It takes some real HP to move a tri-toon. With any motor, you can only trim up until the blade begins to cavitate. When that happens take it back dow a little and you're trimmed correctly.

At WOT what are your RPMs? Also what pitch prop are you swinging?

Rpm's are 5300-5600. I can't remember the pitch I will check in the morning.

If you look at the following link you can play with the variable of your prop pitch, speed and RPMs. Based on the numbers, my guess is you are running a 15p prop. (assuming a 2:1 lu ratio) If you had a 13P, you would near 0 slippage, which I don't think happens on a toon, much less a planing hull.

If you are running a 15p, you have a respectable 20% slippage. You may be able to improve that with different prop style or raising the motor on the pod to reduce drag.

I think your motor could go up to 6000 WOT so reducing drag could help.

You could put a Mercury on the back !!!:D But seriously, a 25' triple tube barge is a lot for a 150 hp to push and truly take advantage of the extra lift the strakes offer. If your Southbay is like mine, it's actually over 27' long and rather heavy, so your speed seems about right to me. Good luck !!! Also I find it takes very little trim before I lose a bite.

Do not mess with anything on the motor. It won't do anything anyway. The only real way to add speed is to get a bigger motor or buy a speed boat with a planing hull. Your rpms are a tad low at WOT. BUT, you are still in the max hp range. Personally, I don't think changing prop is going to do anything for you as it seems to be propped for max speed now as it sits. You might gain a few mph at best, but will loose your hole shot. It might be worth a try.

You can have lifting strakes added to your outboard pontoons. This will help lift the boat out of the water somewhat. Pontoons don't really plane. They displace water and push through the water. Anytime you can lift the tunes up in the water means you are pushing less water and can go faster.

He's talking about the extra lift you are already getting from your lifting strakes. You probly already have all the lift you can use.

Ok, I am understanding more and more. I am on my boat as we speak. We are runing 32mph at 5400rpm. And the pitch on the prop is A Yamaha reliance series, 15-141/2. I do have Lifting skirts.

The front of the boat sits on top of the water the back sits low in the water

Re: Hello, new here and a new toon owner with a cpl questions.

I'm getting 40 mph and 6000 rpms out of my Yamaha 150 hp on a 24' Bennington tritoon with the 15 pitch Reliance propeller. I can easily get the nosecone out of the water with power trim, and getting the nose out of the water is where you get your mph. My motor is in hole #2--about 3/4" off the transom.

Is your nosecone getting out of the water? Are you able to trim it up without ventilation?

Your boat is not a lightweight, as it's long. You probably need to drop to the 14 pitch Performance Plus Yamaha propeller marked M14 to get to 6000 rpm's. See if your dealer will do an even switch--as it's their responsibility to properly setup your boat.

When you get ventilation on the prop, it often means your motor is not at the right height. And ventilation will sometimes happen when the passengers load into the front seats. You might consider dropping the engine a notch--if there's any room to lower it.

Tritoon pluses are that they ride better, handle heavy loads, and make turns better than two toons. But, they're heavier and the middle toons increase drag. Tritoons are often 3-4 mph slower than twin toon boats with lifting strakes. But you won't find any tritoon owners going back to two toons.

Sometimes, you've just got to make some minor adjustments to get the boat to perform up to its potential.

Ok thanks, my motor is sitting as low as it can. So should I raise it up a hole?

I will have to check to see if the nose cone is getting out of the water, I would say yes tho, the front of the toons are barley in the water when we are just floating around
