Hi I have a 1939-1940 1.8hp outboard that has cooling problems. I took everything appart and flushed out the head and pipes. Everything went well until I got to the waterpump. I had never seen one of them before, Its a horizontal "plunger" that operates off a bump or "cam" on the driveshaft. Everything is clear and moving, but im not sure how the plunger returns against the cam. Was there a spring that was supposed to push it back, or does the water pressure off the propeller keep it seated. Any help with this would be great.(pictures or diagrams...microfiche) Attached are a few pictures of the outboard. Its not pretty, but runs like a charm...just have to fix the cooling problem. I appologize for the bad photos.
Image 1 is the carb. Image 2 "plunger: Image 3: airial view of lower unit housing Image 4 big whole is where water input is/plunger Image 5 airial view of power head. I have the shrouds, just havent put them back on yet. Thanks for your time. hopehully someone knows what do do :confused:

Well if you've been running it in a barrel...don't do that. It has to be on boat to cool properly...it relies a good bit on the forward motion of the boat to feed/prime the pump. It will never cool properly in a barrel or tub. I don't have a parts list for those old, small Vikings...so can't answer your question about the spring.

On one this old you need to be seeking help from the experts---the Ask-a-member board of the antique outboard club.
<http://www.aomci.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=askamember>
Asking and resulting advice is free, but if you plan on pursuing the older motors as an on-going hobby then membership in the club would be wise.
A few of them visit this board with advice (like 'FR') but your question might be missed here---best to go direct to the source.

I havent run it in a barrel yet, but thanks for the warning. I have it home from my cottage, and was going to run it in a barrel. But I guess just for a short period of time, or connect a small hose to the cooling head. How much water is supposed to come out of the engine when its running (on a boat)?

Does anyone have one of these motors that they could take the front cover off to expose the end of the waterpump piston and tell me if there is a spring or something there. (the cover i am talking about connects to the top of image 4 i think)-previous post.
