okay I have just purchased a 1979 9.9 evinrude I replaced the water pump and housing, cleaned the fuel pump and rebuilt the carb. It will not stay running it will start if I pull the choke out but then it starts to die and I have to play with the choke, pushing it in and out to keep it running. All the while the throttle is in the start position if I back it off at all it dies. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Also I have replaced the plugs and checked for fire on both by holding them about an 1/8th inch away from a bolt on the head, nice spark from both. The top plug hole pushed out air with a desent force and the bottom sucked in, is that normal? Also I have worked on lawn mowers and when you try to pull start one with out the plug in usualy you can see a mist of gas spray out of the hole not getting that here.

If it will rotate further, you can throttle it up past "start" to get it, or keep it running. Just don't rev it too high - which is normally not possible.

Where is your idle mixture set at?

I'll check the service manual, but ~1 1/2 turns from lighly seated is a good start point. Sounds like it may be as simple as richening the idle mixture a bit- which is counter-clockwise.

1 1/2 turs is where it was set at and I tried going both directions with it.

So, you were into the carburetor and fuel pump. Is the high speed jet absolutely, positively CLEAN? Having to choke it to keep it running indicates lack of fuel (running lean).

Disconnect the fuel line at the carb. and give the rope a few pulls. You should see gas coming out of the line. I would recommend you do a compression test and write down the numbers. Best of luck. Rick.

My guess is with your carb. Specifically the slow speed jet. Did you pull out the core plug and clean in there and replace the plug?

my guess is that you've got an air leak either at the gasket or bowl or in the fuel system.. sucking air somewhere....

Re: help 1979 evinrude 9.9 won't run

Going today to replace the fuel lines someone told me that they might be leaking and allowing air to be sucked in and causeing my problem. Not sure though, wouldn't I be able to see a fuel leak if that were so going to do it anyways. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks.
