help 1995 johnson 105 jet (150)

I have 1995 johnson 105 jet E150JLEOM took it on the lake tonight and was running fine looked back at the motor and it was smoking smelled like burning wires pulled the cover and pulled the power pack cover and what is called in the parts manual "rectifier & regulator was smoking and was hot. killed the battery and put it on the trailer. So what was smoking called a power pack? what would cause it to smoke like that?
