First off if you sheared the flywheel key, you most likely did not have the flywheel torked down to the proper setting. I do not know what the spec is for your motor, I am sure someone else will pipe in with the proper ft/lb for it.

To set the points gap, there should be a mark on the cam on the top of the crank. Rotate the crank until that mark is centered on the point arm. Then adjust the points to 0.020" with a feeler gauge. Moving the plate only advances or retards the timing, it has nothing to do with the gap on the points. You might want to search around and find a factory manual for your motor. They can usually be found on E-bay for around $20. If you post up a pick of the motor, someone on here might be able to tell you the year, or year span which will help you get the correct manual.

Also check out the top secret file at the top of the page (it is a sticky). Lots of good info in there.

Good thing those keys are cheap! I think your engine's flywheel nut is around 50 foot lbs, but make sure this time...

are the coils under the flywheel?if so ,another common error is to misalign the coils and when you pull start it you will shear off a key because your hitting the coil with the flywheel.
