I'm trying to re-install my early model 280dp onto the transom shield after pulling it off and having it rebuilt. I welded up a tool out of a long bolt that screws into the big stainless pins that connect the transom shield, steering fork, and leg onto a big nut that fits the end of my slide hammer. I got everything lined up and started hammering the pis in, but about halfway in the plastic bushings on the leg push out and come tight against the steering fork. How can I keep the bushings in place when I drive the pins in?

The bushings are installed from the outside of the fork. The flange on them go between the fork and the transom shield.
If you get all the corrosion off everything and lube it up, the pins should go in with just light tapping with a rubber mallet.

The transom shield bushings are staying put, its the bushings on the leg fork that are pushing out. Sorry for the confusion.

There is no bushing in the transom shield, only the one in the H fork.
Goes in as shown.

AAARGH!!!! After taking a step back and looking it over again, methinks both of my bushings have separated. The outer ring that holds it must have spilt from the actual bushing part. Only way to be sure is to take it all back off.

On a related note, what is the best accellerant for burning my POS boat to the bround??

(P.S. The second bushing is in the trim cylinder cover/mount that pins in with all the rest of that stuff.)
