Hi Guys,

Sorry to pester but I think I now have good reason to post this.

1977 470 serial 477XXX

Story -

Bought it - ran fine.

Brought home - Ran fine

Took to boat yard - starter shorted. Replaced starter - broke solenoid - replaced solenoid - no start.

Got spark, but carb is throwing fuel out of the top and the inlet is wet but it does not soak the plugs too bad.

I have a notion that there are valves stuck causing pressure in the inlet.

Could it be anything else ? what can I try ?

Changed conderser, plugs and roter too just in case.

Also rebuilt carb with sierra kit.

Still no joy.

Please advise as it was 30 C here today and no water fun.

Thanks in advance.

Ron.

Good point.
I got a clockwise.

Anyone know if the 470 is CW or CCW ?

Would this cause the blow by from the carb top ?

Thanks dingdong if it is the starter I will be so pleased !

The ENGINE rotates CCW, the STARTER rotates CW.

Thanks terry.

So that implies I have the correct starter which in turn implies sticking valves unless anyone can suggest any other reason for fuel coming out of the top of the carb on cranking and no start with both fuel and spark ?

You didn't unhook any plug wires when changing the starter did you ? If you did verify firing order and correct distributor position.

if it was running before the starter clapped out and the solinoid to, it has to be wiring or starter related.assume battery is connected correctly.look at youtube to see if similar engines are acting the same as yours.a compression test may be advisable as well as removing rocker to see whats happening as you crank.remove lead from coil to dizzy whilst checking compression to give a non start scenario.here you go; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxkdkrV7f0s

Ocams razor strikes again.

Starter is spinning the motor the wrong way.
I can't believe I have spent 2 weeks chasing this down.

Will order an exchange Monday.

On another note managed to clear weep hole and there is no coolant so seals must be good.
Cleared impeller cover drain hole and dropped the coolant and it was clean.

Found half an impeller in bits in the heat exchanger so rodded it all clear.

Touch wood next week she will run !

Thanks for the help.

Dingdong was in the nail thanks.

The engine turns CCW when looking at the flywheel, not the front pulley.

Hi don

When cranking the engine the crank pulley is going CCW meaning that the flywheel will go cw making the starter the problem.

Thanks for the figure. It helps
Confirm.
