Ive got an evinrude 3hp model 3432c. I can't get the flywheel off. Ive tried a jaw puller and a 3 bolt foot puller, soaked penatrating oil around the shaft, and this thing wont budge. Anybody have any ideas/tricks? I really dont want to heat it if I dont half to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.:confused

DO NOT use a puller that grabs the OD of the flywheel. That will bend or break the flywheel. Use the 3-bolt puller and don't be timid. It will come off. That little 3hp isn't even one of the difficult ones. Unless somebody has put Locktite on it. In that case, good luck.

Use the 3 bolt puller with the flywheel nut in place loose apply a solid pull, have someone hold the motor up by the flywheel
whack the center bolt with a brass or lead hammer.you could also use a hardwood block on the end grain with a steel hammer. You could try applying dry ice on the crank and nut with a wort freezer.Don't know if it would work but just a thought. You might have to rig a dam to help retain the cold application to the crank.Foam inslutation, modeling clay?

One other important thing too. Don't turn the three bolts into the flywheel to far, because they can and will destroy the coils. Your coils may be shot, but still a good thing to keep in mind.;)

Good way to set that limit is to run a nut up each bolt and use a ruler to fix at 7/16".

I've had good luck applying tension with the puller and warming the flywheel with a propane torch. Tapping top of puller with hammer from time to time while heating.

I won't use heat on any fywheel as heat can mess up a magnet depending on what type of ignition system you have.

DO NOT use heat unless you're planning on purchasing another flywheel.

Use the 3 bolt puller. Tighten the center pilot screw of the puller as tight as possible. Using a large screwdriver or tool of your choice, pry upwards somewhat on the bottom portion of the fylwheel to take up the play..... then belt the top of that puller pilot screw hard. The flywheel will pop loose.

Make sure you give it a good STRAIGHT down blow when hitting it. I've seen techs break off the top of the c/s when not hitting it correctly especially on these little 3 hp's.

Re: Help! 64 evinrude 3hp yachwin

I had a 1977 Johnson 4hp that had the same problem, and here is what I did. I used a three bolt puller as mentioned above, and it just would'nt budge, so I put an air impact on it. That's right, a lug-nut spinner. The center bolt fit a 9/16 impact socket and I thought, oh well if I break something, so be it. I puller the trigger and within a tenth of a second it was off, and no damage done.

I do not suggest you try this until all else fails, and NEVER without PPE (personal protective equipment), but as a last resort it did work for me once. BTW when I got the FW off the 4hp, the coils were toast, so I had nothing to loose really.

good luck

Thanks for all the advice. It finally took putting an electric impact to the puller, but it finally popped off. My grandfather was the original owner of this motor, and I know for fact that the flywheel hadnt been off since the factory put it on! Cant wait to see how it turns out. This motor hasnt been started for 35 years.

Hi,
I've got the same motor. Mine wasn't run for about 30 years also. New coils, clean points, clean varnish out of tank, new waterpump. Use proper amount of oil in the gas, these need it. Sweet running motors! I've got 4.
