Can anyone run me through the way to install rewind spring on spool and how to get spring back in bottom spring retainer. I put the spring on spool, but cant figure how to get bottom of spring to catch on holder. If anyone has done this before ,please help. I think it is around an 1984 model. Thanks

Ive never been on the upper end.But it should be attatched so you can pull the lower end of the spring down. There is a slot in the holder at the bottom you hook it into.I just pulled enough of the spring out to hook it in the slot at the bottom. You have to turn it so the hook on the spring will go up agianst end of the slot.

Thanks ,I will try that tomorrow.I don't have a manual for this motor because it belongs to my uncle. I have fixed many pull cords on other Evinrudes and lawnmowers. This is the strangest set up I have seen yet. The spool had broken where it hooked on spring. Thanks

Im sure you know to load the spring.I have a small c clamp to hold it with. Also you have to put a loop in the rope and come around with it down the spool. If you tie a knot in it ,it won't pass the mount. Its is a bit tricky.

Once you get the spring hooked into the slot, bolt the starter togather.Turn the spool to the left the same direction as the spring,If you go backwards it will let the spring out of the slot. What you have to do is coil the spring and the more you turn it the more tension you put on the spring.Hold on to the spool and let a little pressure off.It should recoil a little. If you got it going right you will know ,that recoil is what pulls the rope back in.You have to get enough tension on the spring to pull the rope all the way back in.By the time you get there you will have to have something to hold it in place while you thread the other end of the rope through the housing,to put the handle back on.If when you put the rope back on and let it recoil ,the rope should go to the last groove on the spool. If it only goes half way up the spool, pull the rope and keep twisting. If it takes all the rope, great cut the rope to fit and tie the handle on.By the way you have to set the tension on the spring before you tie the rope to it.Tricky
