Bear with me here, I'm a brand new boat owner, and a beginner automotive mechanic.
I bought a 1985 Bayliner Capri with a force 85 last September. First 2 times I put it in the water, it ran great. Good throttle response, and I could get i t up to 35-40mph. 3rd time in the water, all of the sudden while cruising it lost all power, and stalled. I got it to fire back up, but it would only idle. I found out later that my father in law had put some old gas from another boat into my tank. I thought this is what caused the problems since he also put bad gas in another boat and it won't run either. So I pulled the engine cover off and noticed some black oily residue leaking from the spark plug cylinders. I replaced the spark plugs, and mixed up some fresh gas, 50:1. It now runs better, but still not right. I can only get it up to 20-25mph, and it has horrible throttle response. Feels as if the choke is half way closed or something. I checked the choke, and its all the way open, and the throttle is opening all the way as well. Ran it out of the water on earmuffs and it seemed to run pretty good, but still only half power on the water. Boating season was over, so my father in law drained the lower gear case oil and put it up for the season.
Fast forward to yesterday. I mixed up a fresh batch of 50:1 gas, and get it back out on the water. Still runs bad like it did last season. After about 20-30 minutes of running around the lake, right as were going to pull it up on the trailer, I hear a loud buzzing sound under the dash. I shut the boat off, turn the key back on (but not starting engine) and its still on. Get back to the house and its not coming on anymore. We hook it up to the earmuffs, fire it up, let it run for about 10 seconds, and it never pumped any water out. So I'm guessing the water pump isnt working, and that the impeller is broken, and that buzzer sound we heard earlier was a high temp warning.
Do you think the water pump not pumping would cause the poor acceleration and bogging out? It was working before, maybe just not very well.
Also, I took off the air induction cover that connects to the carbs and it had some oil sitting in the bottom of it. Is there supposed to be an air filter inside there, because there wasn't. Is the oil in there bad? I know 2 strokes are messy.
Any suggestions on what to try next? I'm definetly going to put a new impeller on, but what if that doesn't fix the problem? Could the old gas have messed something up in the carbs? Do I need to take the carbs off and soak everything in carb clean? Do I need to get rebuild kits for the carbs? Or do you think it might be something with a weak spark? I need to bring my spark tester with me next time and see. Should I do a compression check? What should the cylinders be at? Geez...guess I need to drop $50 and get a manual.
Hope you guys can help, I'm at a loss since I'm quite unfamiliar with this motor (and 2 cycles in general)
