so i got this cheap boat from friend of a friend i went to change the water pump impeller and broke 2 of the bolts holding the water pump on. any idea on how to get these out i.e is it ok to put heat on those ive had penetrating fluid on them for a day and still broke the heads.

also i noticed when i was test fitting the new impeller it seemed too big is that normal? i have impeller part number 18-3030 that i order from iboats. it seems that i have to bend the tips over to get it in the housing my motor is a 1258f6b if that sounds right

Yup. Our friend heat is ok to use. I like to use a propane torch so I don't get it too hot and melt the aluminum. Be sure to drain the lower unit oil first though. I like to heat then spray WD40. it cools and sucks in a little I do this several times before I heat with a vengeance and try to loosen the bolt. "rocking" it back and forth seems to help also. BTW. try to remove the lower housing (torpedo shaped plate under the water pump. It has a lot of rubber seals which our friend heat will destroy. And that is about 30-40 bucks in seals.

The impeller lobes must be bent to install it. It sits in the case off center and it is the difference in the amount of bend in the impeller lobes that pumps the water. What I like to do is to install the impeller on the shaft, then lubricate it with something that will not attack the rubber. Then I slide the pump case down and twist it onto the impeller. This way you can see that the woodruff key in the shaft has not slipped when you push down the impeller.

If you are going to take off the torpedo shaped plate, you will be able to just pour the oil out. This plate seals the top of the gearcase. Otherwise, remove the prop, remove two screws holding the anode behind the prop, remove the anode, and remove two of the lower bolts (of the four) holding in the spool. Remove the fill and drain plugs, and most of the oil will drain out through the bolt holes.

Somebody gave me a hint for allen screws: use a little lapping compound or scouring powder in the hole. Its supposed to help keep the wrench from stripping. Don't know if it works--I havn't had a chance to try it yet.

BTW: If the two broken bolts are not on the fill-vent plug side of the lower unit it is OK to drill them out and drill and tap 1/4 -20 deeper. only one screw will enter the oil chamber if drilled deeper--I forget which one, but if you look, you will see that it is right above one of the plugs on the side
