The disconnected "ground" wire.... is this the kill circuit Black/Yellow wire you're speaking of, and did you disconnect it at the powerpack?
Are you checking for spark with all of the spark plugs removed in order to obtain the highest cranking rpm possible? That engine must turn over at least 300 rpms in order for the stator to energize the powerpack. If a slow cranking rpm... one would have to be very lucky to have any spark at all.
You've covered most of the bases but haven't mentioned the stator.... inspect the stator under the flywheel for cracks and/or a sticky looking substance dripping down on the powerhead area. If the stator is melting down, that results in a voltage drop to the powerpack capacitor resulting in weak, erratic, and eventually no ignition.
