Need help please...I am a newbie to the boating world and I'm looking into purchasing a 87' SeaRay 4.3 V6 (21'). The boat is very clean inside & out, everything works. seller wants $2200 OBO...

Seller says the motor needs work, claims motor loses oil possibly from bad piston rings, says spark plugs foul out pretty quickly. Seller changed valve cover gasket but it does not solve issue. Motor currently runs..

Anyone know of such issue?? Worth fixing or money pit??

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance.

If your looking for a project and your mechanically inclined...

That is way too much money for a broken boat.

Well the seller says the boat currently runs, he used it once this summer. Just was wondering if its worth fixing. The boat is VERY VERY clean, not one rip or tear or stain on the entire boat.

Seller will negotiate on price, would it be worth picking up for $1500? With possible $1000 in repairs.

If the rest of the boat is immaculate then it's probably a pretty fair price. $100 would be better. I doubt he has buyers lined up. Your biggest concern is rot in the boat's wooden components. You want a solid deck and transom. ANY soft spots in the deck are usually indicative of more serious problems below.

how about BOA5T ...if the boat needs a new engine .....

New to boating ....the best money you will ever spend boating is to find a really good marine mechanic who can tell you if the boat you want to buy is any good ...

haha ok thanks...

Thought you were saying not worth it even for $100..

Yea I was thinkin for a $1000 could be a great deal, everything on the boat works gauges, stereo, speakers, lights, etc...and its a SeaRay, will see...

Another thing to consider is exhaust manifolds. If you dont know the age/condition they should be replaced if you're considering a rebuilt engine. Quality units are not cheap either.

$1300 for an engine rebuild ......thats the cost of the labour only around here ...parts incl os pistons can run another $1500 to $2000 ...also that is the cost of the rebuild labour at the machine shop ....what about the cost of pulling the engine and reinstalling which means the leg has got to come off !!!! GO BACK TO PASSING ON THIS BOAT

Rule number one in buying a used boat unless you know marine mechanics ....

is to take the boat for an at least 20 min test run. ......if all goes well

Rule number 2

make an offer subject to inspection by a marine mechanic ...

absolutely true

most reputable marine repair shops do mechanical inspections FOR A FEE

try to work out a deal with the owner, best if they pay for it

if they are not willing to bring it to a shop for an inspection, walk away

No Way I'd call that a Good Deal...Muchless a Great Deal...
