Help a Newb - what is this?

Has fuel lines, battery terminal cables, all kinds of wires (as you can see) running to it... is it a big old fuel pump? This is an outboard, 65 hp Mercury (late 60s, early 70s model)

If so, the wiring, etc looks shoddy - is replacing a huge deal?

Thanks,
Bill

Looks more like a hydraulic trim pump.

Maybe those are not fuel lines then - they are braided steel lines going into the unit.

Man... the wiring just looks like hell.

Looks like it was removed without much care. They draw a TREMENDOUS amount of power. Mine has a breaker set at 110Amps. The smaller wires are the actual controls through a heavy duty relay system. The lines are braided as they will go to the outdrive and operate two cylinders, so the pressure will be quite high. The cylinders not only lift and lower the outdrive, the also hold the outdrive in position under a lot of load.
