OK, I got a 10th edition service manual for 1954 to 65 johnson small outboard motors.

Under the carburetor section is says "Fuel supply is by means of pressurizing the Mile Master Tank"

Does this mean I dont have a fuel pump and if so is that why I got stranded up the river with my hands bleeding from pulling the dang cord so many times???

It ran fine for about 15 minutes. I have a picture I could email someone of what "I" think is the fuel pump. I still think this is a fuel pump driven motor.

Thanks again guys!

Re: Help again!!!

does it keep running if you keep the fuel bulb hard, ie pumping it while its running?

I used to keep a oil can with half a cup of 2stroke mix in it so I could prime my old evinrude 40.. made starting so much easier.

what model, year and hp is your motor?

rgds

Frank

Re: Help again!!!

Spur
Your motor has indeed been up dated to a fuel pump system. Is your fuel pump mounted to the engine block? It would have two hoses on it. one coming in, one going out.
Or another style could be mounted just about any place. This style will have three hoses attached to it. An in, an out, and one going to the cranck case.

Re: Help again!!!

I hope this doesn't muddy the water. Maybe Alcan or one of the other experts will interpret this to see if it has any value. Found it while surfing- it's for a 1956.

: Installing a fuel pump on 56 johnson 5.5

I have a johnson 5.5 and it runs on presure tank, but i would like to put a fule pump on it. So far I heard it is posible to do that but i dont know how. I have a new fuel pump.

#1, I've done it a couple of ways on those 5.5s. The easiest way is to dissasemble the intake manifold, removing the rubber flapper valve from the reed plate that feeds the pressure tank's nipple on the manifold. Then, using a good epoxy like JB Weld or Marine-Tex, fill ONE of the two holes - it doesn't matter which. The remaining hole becomes the pulse feeder for the fuel pump. I am assuming you have a hose-feed fuel pump and not one that needs to be mounted on a flange. Now, reassemble the intake manifold onto the motor. Find a convenient place to mount the fuel pump, make a bracket and run a hose from the (previously) pressure tank feeder nipple to the pulse feed on the fuel pump. Re-route your fuel lines, get a single-line OMC connector to mount on the tiller base and you're done! Make sure you use good hose clamps on all lines and that you have no fuel leaks. The nice thing about this method is that the motor can be returned to original as you don't actually modify the motor castings by removing any material

#2 If you have a pump that fits over a vacuum port, you need to find a port on the head, usually on the side opposite the exhaust. It would have three small holes close together that match the holes on the pump. The center hole may have a set screw in it or it may need to be drilled out. If you need to drill, I'd take the port cover off the
motor first. Then tap the other holes to mount the pump, reroute the fuel lines, etc If you cant find the port and holes, I'd consider using the type used above.

#1 (# 1 apparently disagrees with # 2 information)
The 1950s 5.5 OMCs didn't have intake ports of the removeable type like the larger motors. The intake ports are cast into the block and there isn't a boss cast in for a fuel pump like the later model 5.5/6hp motors.

This one is for a 1959

Anyone Know of a source for a fuel pump and similar parts at a reasonable price? 1959 5.5 hp johnson seahorse.

You can probably buy a brand new fuel pump through an OMC dealer for under $50.00. Ask for one from a 1985 15hp. It'll bolt right onto the boss on your motor. -G.
