Last week upper gears in 87 alpha 1 went out and I have it apart to overhall
Im now disasembling the lower case and everything has gone just right except after removing the thin nut on that holds the pinion gear to the lower driveshaft and removing the locking collar at the upper bearing . and was able to remove the bearing race and shims. but I am not able to pull the shaft out because the gear is still stuck on shaft . I have 1/8 inch free play up and down and have tried to snap shaft up and down to try to remove gear . but for some reason it wont move.
Instructions say it will slide right off . this one just not happening.

Has this happened to anyone else any advice please
thanks Rob

Put the nut back on flush with the end of the threads to protect them. Place a large screwdriver blade between the shifter (clutch) and the end of the shaft and hit the end of the propshaft up with the heel of your hand (uppercut).

Re: Help! Alpha1 cant get pinion gear off

Worked like a charm WillyBwright
I almost have it completely dissasembled
looks like the shift rod is keeping me from pulling out the propshaft and gear
do I need to take out the shift rod next.
and also the other thing im going to have problem with is those needle bearings. is it worth the trouble to drive it out . and yes they did fall out
from reading the forums they need to be in to drive out bearing cage
looks like if you drive them downward to get them out . you would have to drive the new in from downward which there is no way .
im not sure about this . Is it worth the trouble. nothing in the lower is damaged only upper gears. im overhalling to remove any metal and replace seals and upper bearings and gears. These needle bearings are going to ruine my day. your a true friend. thanks again rob
