HELP! Can I soak carb in Mineral spirits????

I am cleaning my carb on my 1979 4.5 Merc. Can I soak it in mineral spirits? If no, then what? Thanks!!

That's not good enought. Go to the autoparts store and buy some carb cleaner. Berrymans B12 is some good stuff. They also make a dip. Remove all rubber parts first.

O.K I thought it might be good because it is made to break down varnish, which is what gas turns to over time. Thanks!
