Hello All- I tried posting this in the Merc Forum but didn't get any advice, so I'll try it here.
Last week I broke down due to throttle failure. (Seems the actual shift control arm is stripped out or something) All cables are intact. I was able to just get into forward gear and crawl home. Needless to say this weeks project is to replace the throttle control on the dash. I purchased a teleflex-morse model #490071 top mount w/trim, as this appears to be a somewhat "universal" model?? (It is a "right hand" configuration- stupid question- How do I tell if mine is a lefty or righty? Throttle arm on the left or right side of the box? Diofference from forward or reverse?)
Anyhow, I figured I'd stop here for a heads up on just how to go about replacing it and maybe find out a little about what I can expect? I'm not sure of the cable type (Merc 200 1986) and how to go about hooking up the trim as well as the cables. Will I find a few wires to go to the throttle leads for the trim or is it a whole dedicated harness only going to the throttle box? Will these wires come from a harness from the motor with other wires going to the tach and other gauges? I noticed a harness of sorts leadind up into the throttle. Are the control cables easy to hook up to the new control ( cotter pins or screws maybe)? Must I unhook cables at the nmotor first? Etc. Etc. I am hoping this is something that can be done myself and would greatly appreciate a little coaching here.
Thanks So Much!
Mario
