Got a late 80's early 90's Johnson 60 HP 3 Cylinder Outboard. Trying to remove the powerhead. The Seloc manual tells me to "remove the three botls on each side of the powerhead, the two in the front, and the two nuts from the studs at the rear of the powerhead".

Does anyone else find these numbers not to add up?

I've removed the two bolts that look to be bolted into motor mounts towards the front of the motor on both sides. I also removed ONE nut from a stud in the rear of the motor at the very bottom of the powerhead (very difficult to get off). Are there any other bolts/nuts???

Anyway, I have everything apart that is supposed to be apart minus the flywheel as I will just take that off once I remove the motor and get the 1" 3/8 size socket for it.

Please help!!! Trying to get this done today so I can start the rebuild.

Close, one nut from the stud in the rear and the 3 bolts on each side. The bolts in the upper mound don't need to come out. And naturally the shift has to be disconnected.

Thanks I got it out. Everything is taken apart now. I didnt realize that the cover needed to be removed just below the cowling in order to see the 3 bolts on each side to remove. When I took off the cover, I immediately saw the three bolts. Out came the powerhead no problem.

Other than breaking one wire on a plug that runs to the alternator...everything else went smoothly. I did see that I have some major vacuum leaks in my reeds though and will need to replace those as well. Perhaps the bad leaks in my reeds put too much air in and made one cylinder run too lean and thats why my middle piston blew.

They always blow for a reason. Make sure you look it over for any other potential reasons or you may get real used to doing rebuilds.

Re: Help!! Currently Attempting to Remove Powerhead!

The guys are right, there's always a reason. There's a couple things particular to a 3 cylinder. We'll assume you have the big bore (56 cid) motor since you say it's late 80's, early 90's.

The 3 cylinder motors tend to run hot on the middle cylinder. They're pretty particular about anything that adds more combustion heat. Like wrong plugs or something other than 87 octane or old gas - regardless of octane.

It may be just that simple. Let us know where you are and how it's been doing.

There were a few updates to those motors too. Have you had all of them done?

Dhadley,

Interesting to learn that these motors run hot on the middle cylinder. I would not rule out the fact that this motor did a lot of sitting and lacked maintenence before I got it. I have a feeling when I cleaned the motor out (fogging it out with seafoam etc...) that I probably freed up the rings, but maybe one stayed stuck in the middle cylinder. But at the same time, the middle reed was open quite a bit when I looked down in there, so im sure a bunch of air was getting in through there which would give me a pretty nasty vaccuum leak. Which also would explain my idle troubles before.

I've got everything taken apart, and I guess the next step is to take the block to a machine shop and get them to clean up the cylinders etc. Then I'll buy a rebuild kit that I found on ebay, looks to have quality parts.

Here is the kit I found:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...STRK:MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=260158021026&rd=1

Here are the reeds:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...m=160177994479&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=006

And so the rebuild begins!

Oh by the way, After looking at parts breakdowns...I believe I have finally concluded that my outboard is a 1992 60 HP Model. The plugs running up under the flywheel to the alternator seem to have changed year to year almost from 1988-1992 and the 1992 breakdown of parts looks more like what I have.

OK, what plugs were you using?

Had the motor been sitting? How long?

What grade fue? How old?

Which upgrades have been done?

Plugs were Champion Marine like suggested in my manual. NGK's were previously in the motor when I bought it though.

Not sure exactly how long the motor sat. It was purchased from a guy on a lake in Lakeland in Florida. His boat was in Freshwater.

I always run 87 octane, and it was usually fresh pumped. (I do have 12 gallons of already oil mixed gas sitting in my tank now that has been sitting for a month because the motor has been down for this rebuild though! :(

Don't know for sure of any of the upgrades either. The guy I purchased it from a year ago did not know much about it. The VRO has been disconnected, so I premix my own oil 50:1.

Motor has always run since I purchased it. It had a few small kinks to work out when I got it...but after 3 or 4 months of messing around with it...the motor finally started running perfect, with a good idle and everything. Ran great all the way up to the last week of December when it blew a piston on the hose at idle.

Make sure the outlet nipple for the overboard water indicator has been moved to the top. make sure you're using the latest impeller, not the 3 vein one.

Those motors tend to run lean in the mid range and on long trips can cause problems on #2.

The nipple for the telltale is on the exhaust cover, How do you move it to the top?
Also if you bore a engine this size (.030) will you have to rejet the carbs?

No rejet necessary.

You'll find everything you ever wanted to know about tell-tales in the FAQ.
