I have an 85 Johnson 140. Was drilling out broken bolt in port side head and got into water jacket a little. Can I weld/seal the water from leaking out of the bolt hole?

Thanks

I think that would depend on how good of a welder you are!
I'd take it to a welding shop and I have 4 years welding experience.

is that like being kinda pregnant?
if its accesable it is usually weldable. however the heat may warp the head. good thing is the specs for surface flatness is in the manual and the head can be surfaced if nessasary.

I don't mind paying a professional to do it but is it hard to get the thing true again? Maybe I'm better off looking for a used head?

Thanks

Re: Help! damaged cylinder head

There's lots of those V4 looper heads around. Make sure of which one you have. Many small bore (1985-87) powerheads were replaced with the big bore powerhead. Just match the number on the head. Dont go by "1985 140". That may or may not be the powerhead you have.

It shouldnt be too hard to find one. Try Jack at Superior marine at 800-338-9281 if you cant find one locally.

Re: Help! damaged cylinder head

The casting numbers are 328624-4. What I did was get off center while drilling 2 bolts but they are next to each other. Essentially I have slightly larger bolt holes that just gets into the water jacket on the head. I thought about just trying to seal it with gasket sealer. Whatcha think?

Thanks,
Cliff

I'm pretty sure thats a big bore head. Look at the tab sticking out on the top of the head gasket. It'll probably have a notch in it.

Re: Help! damaged cylinder head

Per the factory manual and my ruler, it is a 3.5 inch bore. Is that what you mean by "big bore?"
Also, where should I look for the notch? It's got the thermostats/hose hook-ups on top of the head. I've noticed a few similar year models that don't. Factory part numbers are 395043.

Thanks

Look at the top of the head gasket. There is a tab that will stick up between the head and block. That tab will be either straight across or have a small notch cut out.

Re: Help! damaged cylinder head

Yep, thats a big bore powerhead. When looking for the head be sure to mention that if someone asks what year it is. The small bore head wiil work but it wont match the other head and youll have to run 93 octane fuel.

Just match the number on the GOOD head. That will insure a matched set.

Thanks,
Just ordered a used head they said had the same casting number on it. I'll give it a try.
Now I'm wondering which engines need 93 octane fuel and why? Just curious...

Re: Help! damaged cylinder head

If you run small bore heads on a big bore looper, youll need the extra octane. Unless you do a bunch of other stuff, and have a hull that responds, it aint worth it.

No recreational E/J needed high octane. Just use the same head and dont worry.
