I have a 19'Chris Craft with a 1984 omc 3.8v6 in it. The other day i went to start it up and run it and everything was fine. Ran for about 15-20 minutes around the lake. I stopped to take a look at the engine because it was the first time out on the water for a long run and went to put back in gear and it seemed like it starved for gas and died. I put back in neutral and tried to start and it would not even turn over, nothing. About 3-4 minutes later i could get it to turn over and it would be just fine in neutral and would throttle in neutral well but when i would put it back in gear it started jerking and acting like it needed gas. i finally got it back to the dock and let it sit. Today i went out and fired it up and it fired up just fine. Put in reverse to back out of dock and put back in forward to move forward and it did same thing. And then died. This time i had to wait about 4 minutes for the engine to turn over and brought it back to the dock. Hooked up to dock and put it in gear and it just puts and wont get any rpm then dies. But the strange thing is that it will idle in neutral and if i give it gas by warm up idler it doesnt act wierd at all. Can anyone give me some suggestions on where to look first??

Re: HELP! Dies in gear

Bad connection due to corrosion in the neutral safety switch connection within the throttle control, I don't know much about stringer drives shifting mechanism but shift assist microswitch if it has one.

Re: HELP! Dies in gear

Well just so everybody knows or comes accross the same problem my issue ended up being the coil ignition. Picked up one from autozone and no more issues. my system was a points and rotor system and the coil would get heated up and not spark very well. Hope this post helps someone out.
