HELP..Diesel in gas tank

A big mistake........2.5 gallons of diesel was put in my gas tank before noticing it was diesel. I then added over 50 gallaons of gas to fill the tank. I believe the tank is an 80 gallon tank. The boat was driven at idle speeds for 2 miles back to the dock.

I have a 2001 200 OX66 with 375 hrs.

If I leave it in the tank, will this very diluted diesel hurt the motor?

Is there an additive that can put in to minimize any effects?

I assume the best thing would be to completely drain the tank, which now has 80 gallons. At $4.11 per gallon, that's over $330, and how do I dispose of tis amount of fuel?

I need some advise from the experts. THANKS.

Re: HELP..Diesel in gas tank

hello,
doubt it will help, but sure sorry to hear that that mishap took place. no doubt seeing the diesel going in was at least... disruptive!

currently, it is about a 4% solution. while ur idea is surely the best one, diesel is an oil. u may want to top it off with gasoline to dilute it even further.

while optimum performance may suffer, i personally dont think that will hurt ur engine.

if it was mine and the engine ran ok at idle, then i would try some midrange time, and then pull plugs and read them. if ok, i would enjoy my boating, but add gasoline say at every 5 gal oppty. to further dilute it.

heck, who knows... it may out perform seafoam! LOL

this will be an interesting thread...

Is that OX66 DFI?

If it is carbureted you will not notice any difference except maybe a tiny bit more than normal smoke. After all, the engine expects 2% of much heavier oil in the gas anyway.

Re: HELP..Diesel in gas tank

I did the same thing in a much smaller tank (4gal gas and 2 gal of diesel) and larger percentage of diesel to gas ratio. My motor would not run very well at all and smoked bad. The plugs were carboned up bad. I had to drain the tank at a disposal station and then run the motor with gas. After running for about 15 minutes the carboned blew out and the motor ran fine. I then changed the plugs. Yours should be fine but check the plugs after a while.

Re: HELP..Diesel in gas tank

myself? I would pump I would pump it out nd run it through my car.
everything that goes past the piston on that engine has to lubricate it, diesel is a fair solvent.
I have no idea what effect it will have on the O2 sensor but that sensor is bout 370 dollars new.
that engine does not oil seperatly from fuel like most yamahas, clog an injector and that cylinder will burn a piston.
on OX 66 the oil is injected and mixed in the VST.
from the VST the fuel oil mix is injected into the intake tract just before the reeds.
2% oil to fuel is what that motor runs at WOT, I dunno what an extra 4%+ will do.
like I say, I would pump it and run it through a 4 stroke someplace.

Re: HELP..Diesel in gas tank

Thanks for the input.......I started the motor and let it idle for about 45 seconds, noticeably more smoke being exhausted.

I sure would like to not have to pump out and find where to put the gas, although my truck does have a 30 gallon tank.

Any other comments or suggestions??

Wayne,

If you will reread the post that Rodbolt posted it will tell you exactely what to do. You don't need any more info than that. As difficult as it will be to drain all of that gas out it will let you sleep better at night knowing you did the correct thing. :D
