I got me an used riding mower. The previous owner tells me that the guy that had it before him (yeah, right) needed to clean the gas tank and instead of taking it out it made a hole in the tank in order to clean it so he pushes the seat up and go at it... See picture bellow..

Someone tried to seal it with jb weld and it did not work. The tank also has the tank cap cover missing... Rain comes and gets in the tank... Someone tries to mow the lawn with such mix.... Mower wont work... I get mover cheap!!! ;-) He assured me they did not tried to ever start the mower after water got it, however, I had a carb full of gas/water junk. After about an hour of taking the carb apart, cleaning it with carb cleaner (did not even used the deep cleaner) and put it together the mower started and run great at all settings. I used a tank from the old mower just to try it and ride/mow a bit and it worked but is not safe. It does have an issue with one of the blades but I think I can figure it out, if not I will post here..

Anyway, what can I use to fix that hole? They sell this plastic welding sticks in Harbor Freights. I could fill the tank with water to keep any fumes left to bare minimum and use my propane torch to fix it that way but I have never used it before so I dont know if it is effective. Maybe I can use some fiberglass? Any ideas? I already have to pay $20 for the tank cap and I am trying not to pay the almost $80.00 for the tank.

Take it off and have it welded. Have to be VERY careful to get all gasoline and fumes out. may be cheaper to buy a new one though.

Re: Help fixing Husqvarna gas tank

Only fumes it has now is rain water!! lol!!!
Guys, is a DIY, I rather pay $80 for the new tank that take it somewhere to pay $20 or $40 to get it fix. Now, I dont mind spending $20 or $40 getting tools to fix this (is that is the only option left) as I keep the tools and can use them again in the future...

Thanks.

If you were near me, I would weld it for you for free. Have any friends that weld?

If it were mine I would sure give it a shot with a glue gun.If the joints were real tight you might be able to use Methyl Ethyl Ketone (plastic cement) which disolves the plastic allowing it to adhere to a solid mass again but if there are any gaps it would not work.
I cannot find much use for a glue gun but when I can use it there isn't anything better:))
Welding would be the proper way I would guess but you probably have a glue gun and you have nothing to lose.Ron G

JB Weld actually makes a plastic weld compound. I have used it before on the inside of a plastic door panel in an old truck i had.It held very good.

Sand the area, wipe with acetone and put the plastic weld on...

Now that i think about it,it was not made by JB but was called plastic weld epoxy.I think Advance Auto has it.

I found out I have to replace the gas stem so I will have to keep the hole open until I get the part...

P tex will weld it. It is used for snowboard repair and looks like glue gun sticks.

Got the tank fixed using the epoxy. After a week and some use it is holding great. I will add some 4200 for water tight piece of mind once I find that darn tube again!!!
Thanks to all that helped!!

That looks excellent, what kind of epoxy did you use?
I find myself fixing a lot of things, more since I have retired and am always looking for fasteners for the large variety construction materials being used these days.
Most of my repairs end up in a thrift store but it keeps my brain cell busy and it recycles otherwise useless products to the needy.Ron G

I used Locktite Plasti Bonder. First I used 2 screws at the corner of the cut to keep the edge leveled then I applied one "thin" layer. Waited an hour which is what it takes to harden and removed the screws. Then applied 2 more layers an hour appart... So far so good...

Thanks,it is fixed for good I think.I was thinking that drilling a couple of holes or more right through the crack and forcing the epoxy through the holes would back it up from the inside when it hardened but you may have done that when you removed the screws and added the next coat.Nice job.Ron G
