Ok guys, so I have never even driven a boat and I've only been on one 2 times. So I got an old boat with an old 55 hp chrysler outboard on it. I don't know much about it but someone posted pictures of the exact same one I have. here it is...

I know absolutely nothing about boats, but I just got a boat with this motor. The guy that gave it to me said it worked when he last used it years ago. I took the cover off the motor and everything looks nice. No rust and the hoses look in very good condition. I wanted to know what I needed to do if anything before I went out and bought a battery and tried turning it on. And or any maintenance I may want to do. Please bear in mind that I, once again, know nothing about boats so any links or pictures (kind of embarassing but what can I do) would be appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Thanks guys,

First take a boating safety course!
Second get a good repair manual for the engine that you have.
Third don't take anything apart unless you have the replacement parts in hand to put it back together.
