I have a 1960 johnson 40hp Model RD-22 manual shift. I have a leak in the lower unit were the shift shaft comes through the gearcase into the exhaust housing...I bought the lower unit seal kit and drained the oil out of the lower unit. It had water in it and it was real old but no metal chips...so I proceeded to take out the screws holding the two halves together...got one loose and that was it I broke 3 straight slot bits with a cordless impact driver trying to get them out couldn't get them to budge. I am wondering if there is a way to change the seal around the shift shaft without splitting the gear case or do you have any other suggestions for getting this thing apart
