I'm preparing the transom for mounting my volvo XDP-B outdrives, and can't seem to get the old bellows adhesive out of the lip for u-joint bellows....it's cement!

I regret using the stuff at all, since VP does not recommend using it... Three years ago, I used it because I found one drive bellows had water intrusion, so I used the adhesive to seal new bellows in place. I since found that adhesive has nothing to do with the bellows-water problem, but can't seem to find a good way of cleaning it off the surfaces...

Any tricks or magic chemicals out there for this job?

Gasket remover and spray carb cleaner. One or the other should soften it up. Do not use both at the same time and be careful where excess goes.

Be careful what you use. Things like acetone, gasket remover and carb&choke cleaner can cause the rubber to swell and deteriorate much faster.
If that bellows has 3 seasons on it, it's about due for replacement anyway.

The bellows will be chucked...I mean to remove the adhesive from the transom side and from the drive side...the stuff came off the bellows by peeling it when the bellows were put in a bucket of hot water...

I would really hate to have to scrape the metal (or composite) to get the stuff off...

I've always used acetone. Put some on a rag and allow it to set on the glue to soften, then it will come off.
Acetone can be dangerous but it does the job. Lacquer thinner works too.

Acetone it is.

Sounds like i have to wrap the lip with a rag and soak the area to soften or dissolve it...

No wonder VP doesn't mention it in their installation manual for the XDP! The bellows were hard to unglue and remove!

I'll try it later this week, when it gets nice outside...

-Thank you.

The best product to use to protect the rubber and soften the glue is TOLUENE

Good to know, if trying to separate to rubber from the adhesive. Must also warn that Toluene is carcinogenic, as close to benzene as it is...

I read the adhesive box, and it is acetone-based, so it is only logical that by putting acetone back in it, it would soften up enough to wipe off....

-Thanks.

Re: Help getting rid of bellows adhesive!

um.. toluene is NOT a carcinogenic!!! that's why it is used to broadly - it is bad for your internal organs and especially your nervous system and should not be breathed or on your skin for too long.

Acetone is safer for the rubber (and for you) because it will evaporate quickly - toluene will dissolve in and swell the rubber for a longer period of time.

since bellows adhesive is acetone based, that's the best to use. it also works the best in my experience...

Toluene will NOT swell the rubber and you could use one or the other in a well ventilated area if you wish, but my recommendation was Toly as being in the rubber industry for over 33 years we have never used acetone

And also rubber adhesives are not acetone based !
