Now that I've found out the year of my Merc (1983 40 hp),

I need to know if there are any good writeups on hooking up the controls for a newbie.

thanks.

I should mention that the throttle, forward/reverse controls are in the boat already, but it looks like the previous owner disconnected them at the motor for storage maybe?

I can see where they should hook up, but I want to make sure.

Move the lever on the control box slightly while watching the cables. The first cable to move is the gear shift. Connect it to the shift linkage. As the lever is moved forward the throttle cable will begin to move. Connect it to the throttle lever. With the lever on the control box in neutral, both of the cables should slip into their respective linkage without moving anything. If they do not line up perfectly, adjust the barrel (the threaded trunion as its called) so the cable lines up exactly with its linkage. Attach the cable and go for a ride.

Silvertip has all the good 'tips' for ya.

The throttle cable should be attached so as to apply slight pressure on the throtlle linkage at the motor. You should see the throttle linkage resting on the idle stop screw, but not too tight as would tear a piece of paper if placed between them. This ensures you always rest on the idle screw when at rest, in neutral.

Good info! Two great answers in a row. I've learned more in a couple of hours here than I have in the week that I've had the boat d:)
