Wondering if anyone here has electronic experience, that may help. Many years ago I saved and saved to get enough cash to buy a huge monitor. At that point, a 19" monitor was very rare for personal use and very expensive. I spent nearly 800 dollars on a brand new Samsung monitor, the model 900SL.

This monitor has been fantastic since new, and owes me nothing. Just like me, it is now getting old and does not like to wake up from a deep sleep. When I hit the power button the familar degauss click sound is still there, but the screen has the appearance similar to looking through the bottom of an old pop bottle. It jiggles & shakes and eventually the picture clears.

Obviously, there is something wrong. The picture is still fntastic, once it succesfully degauss's itself. From that point on, it works great until it is powered down.

I'm currently shopping for a new LCD monitor to replace it, but hate to see this monitor getting old and dying.

Is a degauss problem a 'simple fix'? What is technically wrong with it?

There is no external forces (magnetic forces) are nearby, the power supply & picture quality are great.

Any ideas?

The deguass will reset if you turn it off and on about five times or more times rapidly, sounds more like your off /on switch is wearing out,try some contact spray on the switch, good start maybe

Re: Help...I can't see.

Congratulations, you own a new boat anchor!

Prices are falling on monitors. Write it off and buy a new one...I bought 2 brand new 19" Viewsonic monitors for $150 each after $50 mail in rebates. These are quality units, just not the new flat panel type.

I also bought a new 19" flat panel Samsung SyncMaster 930b a few months ago for around $250 after rebates.

We've all paid through the nose for state of the art technology over the years. The new stuff is even better and much cheaper.

I haven't had a crt monitor that lasted over 3 or 4 years, AMD.

Got this 17" LCD monitor last Spring and love it.

Well, I love it now that my optometrist made me a set of glasses for 3' viewing, anyway.

I recommend LCD.

I agree with EZ and JB.

Go the LCD route and you will not be dissapointed. Buying a Samsung will also not dissapoint you, I have the 910T which is a 17".

Cheers
Andrew

PS: LCD's are much easier on the eyes.

Re: Help...I can't see.

There's no doubt this monitor is past its expected life span, but this problem is not related to the tube itself or the power supply.

I'll have a new 19" or larger LCD within the next few days. But I have more than 5 computers (hobbiest), and would very much like to keep this 19" Samsung running as long as possible.

Powering on/off or using the degauss menu option all has the same effect.....it works but takes an extra long while to stop jigglin.

For 150 dollars I can replace it with a 20"+ crt, thats for sure.

In the meantime, I just don't turn it off unless I absolutely have to.

Thanks for the ideas.

I'm looking at the Samsung or LG models. Haven't decided yet. Actually I find crt tubes easier on the eyes. But I suspect from a health perspective the LCD is probably much safer for prolonged use. I use both on a daily basis. Have not had an LCD at home, yet.

I compared many ldc's at the store before I bought one.
I was looking for clearity and comfort on the eyes.
So are just bad to look at.
Some have a shiny glossy screen that reflects everything, bad.

I got a Samsung 17", 175v, probably discontinued by now, don't know, but I like it.

I'm using a 17" Sony LCD right now. I really like it a lot. I don't know jack about monitors but this one looked best at the store and it was on sale. :D I'm a happy customer.

Re: Help...I can't see.

CRT screens are still clearer than the LCD's. In fact, my company will provide a 20" CRT monitor for anyone who complains about the 19" LCD's that are standard issue. I noticed quite a difference between the Dell CRT and the new LCD when they first came out. The Dell was much sharper. The LCD got better with some fiddling of the controls, but still not as sharp as the old CRT;s. But I keep the LCD because I can sit closer to the desk with the flat monitor pushed back. The CRT's are so deep, that there is barely space for the keyboard in front. My desk is 30" deep. Most folks use the under desk keyboard trays.

Re: Help...I can't see.

I bought an LG L1950S monitor today. While not DVI compatible, it was priced right and has a good response time at 12ms. I chose LG over Samsung only becuase they are promoting a zero tolerance warranty for dead pixels. Thats a good thing, becuase this one has one dead pixel. Not a big deal, but I will be taking it back to the store for an exchange. It seems to be a great monitor though, with a good picture & clarity.

Still want to fix my old faithful crt though. :)

Mark,
I agree with everything you mentioned, and the desk space is definitely an issue. The 19" crt I had was a special short model.... only as deep as an old 15" crt. I liked that feature a lot. Also I will miss the dual inputs. My main connection was BNC, but I often run 2 computers side-by-side and I could hook in a VGA connection on the fly. Switching back and forth was a breeze, one monitor for 2 computers.

Still looking for someone who knows how to fix a faulty degauss. Keep the suggestions coming.

Depending on the way it's giggling [horzintal or Vertical] you can test the circuit with an Ohem meter sometimes if your luckey the battery in the ohem meter will open the resistor or capasitor and it will operate perfect, when it does you have found the bad part,if not the readings will tell you ,resistor's and cap's are coded values, you can also use a hair dryer to heat them but some might then to be frozen to break down[spray nitrogen]get it at electronic supply shops

Re: Help...I can't see.

The picture looks just like it does whan I degauss manually, except it lasts about 30 seconds. Generally clears itself eventually and works fantastic till the next time I reboot.

If I leave it powered on when the computer istelf is off...the monitor repetitively clicks. Thats something new within the last week.

Boat anchor eh.
