Hello to you all , I have a mercury 9.8 h.p 2cycle 110 model which I believe is a 1978 that I think I really jacked up . Okay here is the problem I took off the lower end everything went fine until when I had it off and by I curiousity turned the shorter shaft and it made a click noise then locked. So I try to turn it back the other way and it wont budge so I left if alone . I began to put the lower end back on and now it does not want to meet together with the upper part of the o/b its as if something is blocking it . I can get it around and inch to inch half to be fully seated with the upper part of the o/b but it wont budge anymore. And I dont want to take it to a shop to get charged an arm and a leg for something that could possibly be so simple.. If anybody has any idea how I could possibly fix this please help any info it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Okay so I managed to get it all bolted back together. And I tryed shifting from nuetral to reverse and forward and it seems as if the gearing is backwards now like when I put it in nuetral the prop only goes one way and when I select the forward position it goes reverse . Please help !!!

Both of you. Raise your hands where I can see them. Slooowly back away from those motors.

Now, go get a maintenance manual for your motor and read it. There will be a detailed procedure for checking the shifter, righting it if it is wrong, and a detailed procedure for installing it on the mid with everything working.

hope it helps

I agree whole heartedly.

On the other hand, this is really a simple thing to correct. Same thing happened to me first time I took the l/u off my 9.8, and as John said, both the Seloc manual I have and the OEM Merc manual have very clear instructions.

But it can be figured out without the manual, just think it through. The shift rod in the l/u has three positions it clicks into and you can turn it clockwise and counter clockwise to feel those three positions. I use a pliers to grip the rod to turn it to feel the positions. Don't do anything to damage the rod though.

In each position, the prop will behave differently. In one position it will spin freely clockwise and not spin at all counterclockwise. In another position it will be opposite to that. In the third position (the middle position) it will spin freely both ways.

These are your three gear positions - forward, reverse and neutral!

Put the gear rod in the forward (or reverse) position. Put the shift lever in forward (or reverse). Replace the lower unit. Sometimes you have to move the prop a little (to move the shift rod a little) to get the shift rod to engage properly up inside the engine. That's why you have it in forward (or reverse) instead of neutral.

Hope this helps. But you really should get a repair manual if you're doing this stuff. The OEM merc manual is best, but I did two different 9.8 waterpump repairs with the Seloc manual and it was OK, not the best, but OK.

I had the same problem the FIRST time I tried to put it back together. All you have to do is keep trying 7 or 8 more times until YOU LEARN HOW THE SHIFT DOGS AND SHIFTER SPLINES WORK. LOL

GOOD GRIEF!!!! Well finally got it all put back together in the correct gearing position . I just had to fiddle with the shorter shafter for a while I guess it was kind of a trial and error thing . I glad all you good fellows were there to add your response and I hope one day I could return the same favor to you . But for now i'm still a newbie at this stuff and still learning. Well thanks to you all who viewed/replyed to my posting . Oh and I will definetly make sure I get that service manuel.
