Model J90TSLEUA, SN 04263699.
I'll be going to look at this motor in a couple of days. Is it a 90 or 60 degree?
Pros and cons of each type?

Thanks,
Kal

looks like a 90, bubble back. nothing wrong with that style. it has been dependable, basis style for 40 years.

I believe that's a flatback crossflow, 90 degree.

The exhaust covers between the cylinder banks on crossflow engines are either flat or rounded. The rounded ones are tuned exhaust, sometimes called bubblebacks.

Re: Help ID 1997 90hp Johnson

115HP crossflows were bubblebacks, 90HP crossflows were flatbacks.

Crossflow V4 engines/motors were made through model year 1998. See for examples the Johnson XJ115HXECM and XJ90TSLECM.

Re: Help ID 1997 90hp Johnson

So can I change from flat back to bubble back to make my 88 special higher horsepower? Of course I'd probably have to change carbs and or jets. Anyone do this? Or would i gain little but burn more fuel?

surrender, and other things, or you could really screw up your motor.

if you want more, sell what you have and buy what you want.
