Serial number would be on a plate attached to the transom bracket.

Re: Help ID 70hp MERC

I have an '88 70hp it sounds like thats your engine, but you will need a serial number for positive ID, These old 3 bangers seem pretty reliable, mine hadn't been run for about three years so I spent two seasons cursing at it an replacing hoses, diaphrams and gaskets, but once I got all the old dry rotted crap replaced it runs pretty good. The biggest complaints I hear are rough idle, and the cost and headaches when the electronic ignition fails. The good news is there a some guys on these boards that know these engines pretty well and are more than willing to share their expertise.

Good Luck

hey thanks alot shipoffools thats the kinda input i was looking for...when i asked the dealer about the year he said he belived it was an 88 but the salesman told me 90 id rather belive it to be an 88 seeing the sales man probaly added on a couple years to make it seem newer....my plan is to run this till i get my 82' 90 merc inline running again ...how do you find the 70 powerwise?i loved the power of my 90 with a top speed of 40 mph but hated the fuel problems im constanly having with it..thanks again
