The history of this motor is that I bought it used about 14 yrs ago and used it twice. It was a couple of years old at the time. It has been in storage ever since. That would make it a late 80's I think. I would like to know the year so I can buy a manual. Serial # is gone. Looks like it was only a label. No. on the welch plug H1842869 doesn't look like a serial number for this era. Any help appreciated.

Dave..

dont think its late 80's, more like late 70's. I may be wrong but turbo prop motors came out late 70's already

I have just done some poking around, and the 14hp engines started production around 1988 with model number VE14RCCS, and stoped in 1989 with the VE14RCEC.

I hope this helps you out a bit.

There was also a commercial model "14" built between 81' and 91'. But the "SPL" on the hood would tend to indicate the model between 88' and 89' as Lark has posted.

Thank you. That helps a lot. It seems as if it's hard to find information on these "commercial" 14hps. Maybe a manual on a similiar year 15hp or whatever would be OK. Luckily most of the ignition part no's are plainly marked. I just want to go through it before I fire it up. Ran like a charm when put in storage. Thanks again.

Dave..

Threr are "freeze" plugs, made from aluminium, pressed in caster motor block. They will have serial and model number stamped in them. The late 15 HP had thru-hub if I remember right, but the 14 can have been a kindof commercial 15, though.

Thanks G Dane. I mis-spoke in that what I called a welch plug does actually look like a freeze plug. It is top rear starboard side of the block. That is where I found the H1842869. That is the only number I can find that even resembles a serial #. I wonder if it could have been made outside USA?

Dave..

The ones made over here did start with a B for belgium in serial number. By the colours it looks like 81 - 88 thats all I can say, and everything else seems that way too. I think those powerheads are pretty much the same all years thru. Lower units are basicly alike too, but if you want a parts list, its something different of coarse. They are known as good sturdy motors. This is a great site: http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing Info/Johnson 9.9_15.htm
