Help identify this outboard - Eska?

From photos of other units that appear similar, it looks to be an Eska 5hp. Can anybody confirm and tell me anything about it? The cover is missing I gather. There are no brand names and only the simple tag you see on the engine.
Hopefully you can see them here regardless if you are a facebook member or not.

I bought it and a 1960 Johnson 3hp JW-16 at a garage sale last weekend. Both had not been run in at least 12 years and I'd like to get them both running. Both seem to have decent compression based on the pull the cord test.
Thanks!

the 643-19 is a 5hp, eska used this block on the 5hp up until 1972.

check it out for yourself, http://home.earthlink.net/~brixent/eskaid.htm

its got points to so you won't have to worry with the solid state ignition.

Nice old motor, pull the lower unit and replace the water pump and change gear oil...check for leaking seals. Parts are readily available.

The Eska should make a serviceable fishing companion but the real treasure is the JW-16! Widely recognized as the finest small fishing motor ever designed the Johnson JW & Evinrude Lightwin series are the epitome of what a small outboard should be. I only own 2 runners and the remains of a parts motor but I'm always looking for more!

There are 3 active threads with a LOT of good info currently on the AOMCI site including service & parts lists and compression advice.

Re: Help identify this outboard - Eska?

Thanks. Is ESKA the engine only or the overall unit? What do I ask for when ordering an impellor?

I like the Johnson better too. Is it a rarity? It's missing the aircleaner assembly of some sort. Can you show me photos of yours?

Below are a couple photos of the Johnson as it was purchased. Its dusty and oily but you wouldn't believe what I paid for both of these.
What's the Johnson worth in running condition?

<Is ESKA the engine only or the overall unit? What do I ask for when ordering an impellor?>

Eska built the outboards using engines sourced from Tecumseh/Power Products.

Call Certifird parts with the model # in hand and tell them you want an impeller or full waterpump kit for that model. 1-800-356-0777 They purchased the rights and parts to both Eska and Tecumseh when they died so they are the primary source for anything for both.

<I like the Johnson better too. Is it a rarity?>

Hardly! Many thousands of them were produced by both Johnson & Evinrude over a long time period beginning in the early '50s stretching all the way thru the 4 HP version which continued into the 90s. They also produced a single cylinder model that was just half of the engine of 1 1/2 HP morphing into a 2 horse.

<It's missing the aircleaner assembly of some sort.>

The airhorn/silencer is missing. It mounted on the carb throat and took a hard turn down the port side to the rear. The screw missing from the rectangular flat plate was where it attached at the rear. In general true 'air cleaners' aren't considered necessary on the water.

<Can you show me photos of yours?>

Sorry---I don't have that capability.

<What's the Johnson worth in running condition?>

Whatever sum you and a willing buyer arrive at that is agreeable to both parties. That is the only completely honest answer that anyone can give you since any other answer would be predicated on events related to a different motor, different buyer and seller and different circumstances.

Re: Help identify this outboard - Eska?

Thank you very much.
As far as a question about rarity, I was referring particularly about the JW-16.
What are my odds that the coil is still good on either considering age and lack of use?

As was I too.

Good odds that the Eska coil is fine.

Very, VERY poor odds on the coils on the Johnson! Unless someone has already replaced them just count on doing it. The modern pea-green replacements are available thru OMC dealers, Sierra (P/N 18-5181), NAPA and many O'Reilleys.
