Hey guys. I bought a used Force motor, supposed to be 70 HP, to replace the 91 70hp force on my boat. The owner didn't have a title or know much about it but it has 70 on the cowl to denote HP. The serial is pretty faded, but I'm sure it's 0E096681. When I try crowley Marine parts search it won't pull up, but the Mercury website identifies it as a 1995 90 HP. Is there another place other than the transom bracket with serial or model information? I am trying to nail down model info so I can get a manual for it.

Re: Help identifying Force motor

If it has a 10 inch prop it is a 70 or 75. If you remove the cowl and is has three cylinders and a single carb it is a 70 or 75. If it is a three cylinder engine with three carbs and an airbox, it is a 90. The 90 will also have a 13 inch prop. I doubt that the transom clamp sticker is incorrect because the 70 and 90 used different transom clamps. If someone tried to change the sticker, it would read VOID. The 70 and 75 are basically the same engine with an exhaust restrictor for the 70 and use TC Tillotsen carbs. The 90 will use WB or WE carbs--much smaller than TC.

It is, however possible to change complete powerheads from 90 to 70 because the basic block and bolt pattern is the same, but that would require changing the crankshaft so I doubt that that was done. But hey! I have seen stranger things done.

It used to be that there was a stamped number on the block near the top cylinder, next to the head. If there you can cross reference Mercury. If all else fails, take the model number off the carb. Specific models were used for specific models and years of engines.. Ask Mercury

Thanks for the reply Frank. 3cyl, 1 carb. Not sure what size the prop is but it looks like a 10 inch. Like I said, the cowl says 70 on it like the one I already had. Guess I'll have to try and find some way of figuring out what year and model it is. Probably call local merc dealer tomorrow.

Post a couple of photos of the cowl, and the engine with the cowl off from different angles. Different years had different ignition systems and cowl decals. A couple of guys on the forum can probably get the correct year for you.

Re: Help identifying Force motor

I called local Mercury dealer with my serial, said according to the serial I gave her, was a 90 HP. Took another real good close look, I was mistaking a 0 for a 1. Real serial number is 0e096680, not 81. Thinking about having that stamped somewhere lol. The mystery motor is a 1994 70HP ELPT H070412RD. Thanks for your help Frank!
