I'm new to boat motors and I am trying to figure out exactly what I have here and where I might be able to find a manual for the operation and care for this motor. I've searched online but can't find a lot.

As it turns out - the extra "c" in the model is what was throwing me. It should be J50TSLEC. Still - I'm finding it hard to find a manual specific to this model.

As far as I know it's a 98 50HP SPL. I am curious about oil mixture and whether or not it is premixed. Plus - I'd like to know what maintenance should be done to it after it's been sitting for a while and before I start to operate it... I appreciate any help anyone can offer. I'd like to give it the best care before I try running it out in the water.

Re: Help identifying Johnson J50TSLECC - New motor to me

Ok - I've got the engine identified.. Guess I posted a bit too soon.

My main concern is caring for the motor and what to look for on an older unit that hasn't seen a lot of use and spent some time sitting around. It has been a fresh water motor for years and it's on it's way to salt/brackish..

Any suggestions on first things to look at? Fuses, impellers, pumps?

I believe the " special " models did not have the automatic oil injection .---To be safe you should run with 50:1 gas oil mix untill you determine this for sure.----A new impeller should be installed as a precaution.-1998 model.

Look at the motor and see if it has a VRO or just a fuel pump. Just to be sure.

Finally picked up the boat and took some shots of the motor. I'm still not sure what I have here.
1998 Johnson 50 SPL. Need to do some maintenance - but any guidance would be helpful as to what I have and what to start with first. Thank you.

The VRO pump should be on the port side next to the carbs, This looks as though it doen't have one so mix it 50:1 and you should be good to go, Very clean looking enigne if I might add!

Re: Help identifying Johnson J50TSLECC - New motor to me

I was very pleased to see how clean it was when I opened it up. I assume the corrosion on the spark plugs is to be expected. It also has a split fuel line right at the external connection. Seeing as how it looked so nice I was hoping everything with it mechanically would be the same way, though I know that's wishful thinking. If it is in top shape I want to keep it that way.

My plans are to:
change the lower end oil
Replace water pump/impeller
Change plugs

I'm not sure if the carbs were fogged for the winter or not. Don't really know what to do there. Or if carbon guard is also in order for the motor.

I would still check that smaller third line going in, follow it up it may have a new type pump in it which is different than the one in my 1987. Because I do not understand why there would be an extra hose and an oil tank unless there was an oil pump.

I will look at BRP and see what's up.

Of course that's the one place where I didn't get a decent picture.

Go to Shopevinrude.dot com, find your engine model and look under fuel pump amd then fuel pump amd filter, post back as to which type you see. Should be up front next to the starter.

Unfortunately I won't be able to lay eyes on the motor until the weekend. 3.5 hours away.

Will do. I'm also going to be looking into how to bleed the power tilt/trim system and top off the fluid. I noticed that it doesn't really want to raise all of the way up without a little help by lifting it.

There may be a seal that had a slow leak, the procedure is to full the resivoir while it is up position and then cycle it thru. checking fluid level as you go.

The spot where the regular pump would mount is vacant.----So the powerhead may have been replaced with one that has VRO.-------Inspection will tell for sure, and you need to be sure of what you have !

AGREED, there should only be one hose entering ror the fuel supply. A second hose would be from an oil supply tank.
There were 2 generations of pumps made. One is much larger than the second one. Look very closely. Again also look at the regular fuel pump. It should be on the opposite side of the powerhead and there shouldn't be both types.
