Hi, I am trying to identify this motor. i have just bought the boat and was told it was an 87 model 115 v4 with the vro removed.

I have since found the model# J115TLCSA and serial# 670263 on the mount and it is 1980.

I also checked the starboard side of the powerhead and could only really find 325596

Here is 2 pictures more can be supplied if these can help aswell.

any help identifying if it is a 1980 or the tilt is off something else and the motor is newer.

Re: Help identifying Johnson Outboard

On the back of the engine, between the heads, there should be an aluminium welch plug, what the Yanks refer to as a freeze plug.

It will look something like this

That should have at least the serial number of the engine on it. Hopefully it will also have the model number.

If it matches the numbers on the transom bracket, then yes, it is a 1980 model, and no, no-one has swapped the powerhead.

The model number wasn't always stamped onto this plug on the Aussie made engines.

It is a 1980 with a later hood on it. OMC started painting their motor blocks black about 1985 or 1986. Also your motor looks to have the older style coils and powerpack set-up. They had modular coils by 1987 along with (I think) a single powerpack instead of two....
- Scott

Re: Help identifying Johnson Outboard

thanks alot :) . atleast i have something to go by now. Is there anything I should look out for in particular on these motors?

Compression showed up at 120-125psi on all 4 cyclinders.

Re: Help identifying Johnson Outboard

those are good numbers.

Do you know when the motor was last serviced?

If not, then the water pump impeller is a good idea to replace.

Since the motor is 25 years young, it would be a good idea to check over all the fuel hoses and make sure they aren't getting hard and brittle or cracking. Same goes for the wiring.

Check the anode (the little fin behind the prop) under the cavitation plate to see if it still serviceable. It should have a white calcified appearance, but still have a good shape to it. If it has worn to a point where it looks very thin and pointed at the tip, then it is time to re-place it.

I have no idea when the motor was last serviced. First thing is there is a minor leak from the seals of the tilt. i was going to do this myself as it looks easy enough. also what else is required for a general service? it has new plugs should i replace Gearbox oil aswell? anything else?

Water pump, thermostats & gear oil.

I would start out with a compression check. That will give you an idea of the overall health of the internals.

BTW -- just to avoid confusion, the torque tab (little fin behind the prop) is not an anode on that motor.
