I have 3 Johnson Motors. 2 25 hp motors and one 70 hp motor.

Can someone tel me what year they are?

The first 25: Model# 25R 72R
Serial# E3599924

The 70: Model# 70ESL74M
Serial# J4067387

The second 25 was mounted to an Evinrude clamp and pivot(?) so the tag would be misleading. Is there somewhwere else I can find an identifying #?

P.S. I think the unidentified 25hp is a early/mid 70s.

Re: Help identifying motors

Hi, Cajun.

The first 25 and the 70 were both made during the 70s, when the year model was in the model number.

So the 25R72R is a 1972 rope start 25, and
the 70ESL74 is a 1974 electric start, long shaft 70.

You might find the model number of the mystery engine on a quarter-size welch plug on the block.

cajun66,

How are your motors running? That is quite a collection you got there, I am slowly building up mine as well...LOL! 1973 Mercury 7.5 HP.
1956 Elgin 7.5 HP, and a 1961 Johnson 40HP outboard.....LOL! Good Luck!

Re: Help identifying motors

One of the 25hp motors runs great, the other needs points. The 70 runns good, and I have a 75 18hp Evenrude that runs. But my favorite is my 53 Fleetwin 7.5 Evenrude.

I just wish I had boats for all my motors. :/

Re: Help identifying motors

I guess it doesn't matter much since my dad threw his 56 elgin 7.5 away after a rod cap screw came loose.

But, can you still get parts for elgin that old ?
That was a good ole motor.
