Hi everyone,
Just a little bit unsettled about an engine I just won on ebay for $540aus
It is a 1972 100ESL72R 100hp johnson which looks to be clean on the photo's" I know that means nothing" But I have yet to pick it up this week. the owner quote was, THE PROP SPINS FREELY IN REVERSE BUT GOES FORWARD WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. Searching some threads I have worked out this is a hydro electric setup and It could be something as simple as a broken wire to repair this problem.. But thats best case!! My question is if this is not the problem what would be the next step? and can I do it myself and what tools would I need and are they pricey. Thanks in advance, sorry about the long post.:)
p.s- was this an good motor in its time?

In the first place, the motor has to be running in order to shift. Is it???

If it is running and won't shift, the first thing to check is the gear oil in the lower unit. It serves as the hydraulic fluid to do the shifting and is a special oil, OMC/BRP "Premium Blend" The next most common reason for failure to shift is the switch in the remote control. Very hard to find a new one and very expensive if you do.

Was it a good motor at the time? Absolutely. Does it get bad-mouthed now? Yep, though mostly undeserved.
