I am installing a Tekonsha Prodigy Brake controller on a 2002 Acura MDX that has a tow package - with 4 wire connector.

As per instructions, I have to connect
1. one of the wires from brake controller to the battery - do i directly connect the wires to the battery terminals?

2. connect output of the brake controller to the back of the vehicle (to 7 way connector) - has anyone found a way to route the wire through the inside of the vehicle through existing channels (instead of routing the cable from below of the vehicle)?

I don't think the 2002 MDX's are wired for a brake controller, but there happens to be already some kind of connector below the dash of the acura 2002 close to where the brake controller is typically connected. Is that connector for a brake controller or something else?

Appreciate any help you can provide - John

Jon,

I don't think there would be existing wiring for a brake controler in your truck, but it is possible. I would contact your local dealer and consult with the service manager about it just in case.

As for connecting your power leads, I do believe you want them hooked up to a circuit that is only hot when the key is on. Other wise the system may run your battery dead.

Finaly, routing the wire through the inside of the SUV would be your best plan. Make sure you protect it with split loom or an equivelent to prevent shorts. I have run wires in this manner before and with careful placement this is your best bet.

Good Luck!

If your rig does not have a pre-wired connector under the dash -

Black to + battery terminal through a thermal circuit breaker (20 - 30 amp)

White to a very good ground connection (I prefer the - battery terminal)

Blue to the service brakes pin on plug at rear of vehicle

Red to brake light pin on plug at rear of vehicle. Stay away from the brake light switch under the dash.

You should notice that the blue and black are heavier gauge wires than the red and white, use same for same wiring.

No need to find an ignition hot power source, the prodigy goes to sleep when inactive and draws a miniscule amount of juice.

I like to solder and shrink wrap all connections but that is not critical, just better than crimping. Find a rubber grommet through the firewall to run wires, avoid wire on metal contact. The drivers side internal kick panel is usually a good place to route wires to the rear of the vehicle, there should already be a loom there, just follow that and avoid the bottom seatbelt mount.
