We purchased a Latex foam mattress about 6 mos. ago and we just can't get used to it. We wake up feeling like we are laying on a heat pad. We went with the latex because it was suppose to "breathe" better than the memory foam and was not supposed to be hot. The comfort is great and we like that part about it. We have tried a thick cotton mattress pad with no help. Has anyone else had this problem? Do we just write this off as a loss and go with the sleep # bed? Thanks for any help.

Re: Help! Latex foam mattress

I got a 4" memory foam pad to go over my conventional mattress and a memory foam pillow to go with it from my grandchildren at Xmas.

I love it. It is neither hot nor cold and it cradles my weary old bones just right. Except for the high cost I would have the whole memory foam mattress.

I "slept" on a latex mattress in a motel once. It was miserable. That thing breathed about like a latex sheet. I ended up doing the Crock Dundee thing on the carpet.

Latex Foam is a brand name here in Ghana - and basically it is a piece of sponge foam between a burlap sack. Not very comfortable at all - my back is longing to get back to the USA in another month!

After 5 months the heat is not the problem, it is the bumps, humps, gullys, etc. that are all over the mattress with not a single comfortable place to sleep on!

More than you ever wanted to know about memory foam sleep systems.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=798948&enterthread=y

But, it contains good advice on how to "make" one for less than half the price of something like a tempurpedic...Basically where to get a good 6-8" foam base and a quality 4" memory foam topper to put on top...

Re: Help! Latex foam mattress

Since this is what i do in the retail let me try and help here. Latex,Memory,Swedish,Tempurpedic, and what ever else name is attached to it is foam. There are many different densitys but foam is foam..

Sears carried a 2.5 density foam some fity years ago until the innerspring came along. Memory foam is not for everyone.

In your case what they have done is sprayed a plastic film over the cells which when you push down it makes it have a slow release feel. The down side is that the air is trapped and cannot breathe. Film does not allow heat to disperse as in normal mattress sleep sets. So all your heat is trapped inside. After eight hours the mattress will return to its normal climate or room temp. once you get up.

A foam pad is a cheap fix..If your spring unit is bad it will create dips on you mattress in about six months. No warranty either..

Select Comfort is the same as water beds..Great for young backs..But not avisable if you have back problems..Plus cost can go anywhere from 1800 to 5000 bucks for air mind you..

Here is some points to help you choose your next mattress

1. Don't but test a sleep set lay down on it

2. Most of us are side sleepers. Try it on you side. Your pressure points will tell you whats the best one. If you feel uncomfortable then it is not the right set for you.
You want firm when on your back and cushioning on your side.

A name does not make a mattress since all companys basically buy off the same Manufacture be it spring or foam.

Seely for instance may have a six bed line up. The firm one has very little cushioning which makes it very firm...But add three more inches of foam to that same spring unit and it now gets softer

Consumers are so gullible as i have seen here. You will believe anything..Do some research before you buy your next mattress. If you believe all that you hear then i got a bridge i want to sell you..

Buying a mattress because your neighbor has one is not a good mode of thinking because what feels good to them may not feel good to you...

Sorry this was probably boring to many of you..I hear this everyday..once you understand whats under the covers so to speak you will feel more comfortable in your purchase

You can save your self hundreds of dollars if you do a little research..IMO of course

OMC...You had the right idea but the wrong mattress..Not sure what type of bed you went with.
I sell Visco Tech memory foam which is a loose cell foam(no sealant spray so it is a very soft feel) $899 for a queen set. Always remember that furniture stores generally mark them up 300%. Stay with the specialty bedding sleep shops..

When folks come in with Arthritic conditions I help them choose an innerspring with about 4" of supersoft foam with a quilted cover..What this does is allows your pressure points(such as shoulder and hips)to not feel the firmness of the spring unit yet be firm when laying on your back..

Am curious on what type of mattress you bought and how do you like it? Its to bad the salesperson did not take the time to see what you really needed instead of the (spiff) that he got for selling that set to you..

I also overheat with latex foam and I thought the memory foam Tempra pedic bed aka SPACE BED would help my Arthritis so I dished out $1500 plus $250 for the pillows. I hated it, It was as hard as a moss covered rock. The third night I slept in the spare room. After a week we took it back, Got stuck with the pillows but did manage to get 1/2 the price back on them. Still don't use the pillows. NOTE: They said we were the first people to not like the tempra pedic.

gonfishn, We ended up with a high end Spring Air and it is very comfortable. Before we bought the tempra pedic(4"memory and 4"of some other foam) we tried out a softer memory foam (can't remember the brand) about $7-800 but the salesman convinced us the NASA approved one would be way better.

LubeDude, We had a Sealy and we had the same symptoms. Went to a Stearns and Foster and we love it!! No aches or pains. Reminds me of the old Curtis Mathis commercials, "costs a little more but darn sure worth it".

Now this mattress is 14" deep.

Gone fishin:

We are in the same quandry, We just got rid of a waterbed, thank God, wife liked it because it was warm, It was fine for her, as she wieghs in at about 125#s, but my 240#s didnt care much for it. We now have a queen sealy that is resonably firm, but we both are having achs and pains when we wake up and durring the night. We are concidering a 3" Memory foam cover that is rated at 4#. Will this be ok, or is this another waist of money.

Re: Help! Latex foam mattress

The average person stays in a water bed about 8 to ten years..There is no support on water or the air beds.. If you are having problems you doc will tell you to get out of it..

I see about ten folks a month coming out of water beds...Give your mattress at least a month before you judge it.. First couple of days you may feel achy..Only because your muscles are adjusting to a firmer feel.

LD.. go get some egg shell crate foam..You can find at Wally world or kmart..If it fells better to you then you need more cushioning.

A mattress that is lets say ten inches thick would be considered a firm..A mattress with 14" of cushioning is going to fell softer..Your pressure points are telling you softer..Older we get the softer we want..

Names dont make the bed..They all basically use same spring units..Less cushioning firmer feel..more cushioning softer feel

There are two types of warrantys out there..

Stay away from pro rated mattress..On a ten year limit warranty its prorated like an ole car.. great for guest rooms though

Non prorated means its a hundred percent covered for life of warranty. These are your better bedding sets.

Remember department Store have an up charge of 300%..If you paid over 2000 for a queen set you got taken no matter what name is on it..Stay with Specilty bedding shops..Less on the pocket book and same quality..
