Help Me Identify My Carb...

I thought it was a Rochester 2GC. It has the electric choke and looks like the pictures of the 2GC. The engine is a 1978 Mercruiser 470 - 224ci. I went with the application for that engine but the carb kit gaskets don't fit. All of the metal/plastic hardware in the kit looks fine and the float is identical to what is in it but the gasket around the 2 barrel section of the carb is too small.

The parts I ordered:

Mallory Carb Kit 9-37616
Mallory Float, carb 9-36903

The numbers stamped on the side of my carb (I haven't been able to locate anything referencing these numbers)

06079A-1
4Y03

Thanks for any help! The carb seemed to be flooding out so I figured I'd rebuild it but, it actually looked great inside (recently rebuilt), although I think the float adjustments were wrong.

Re: Help Me Identify My Carb...

How many idle mixture screws are on your carb?
The Rochester has 2 mixture screws, the Mercarb has only 1
While they look similar, the gaskets are not the same.

Me and my dad noticed that. Where it looks like the two idle air screws would be , they are blocked with brass, in between them is one long adjustment screw.

You have the Mercarb, not the Rochester. Wrong rebuild kit.

How do I find out what model year so I can find the right rebuild kit. I've tried tracking down the stamped numbers with no luck.

What's the Mercruiser SN of your engine? Or just look it up for a 78 470, and it should show the Mercarb.

Re: Help Me Identify My Carb...

Don't have the serial number currently but looking up the year, 1978:

470 224/ L4 1976 - 1982 4208730-6218036 R2/2GC (1)
470 224/ L4 1983 - 1984 6218037-6916778 M2/MerCarb

It shows that the rochester was used and not the Mercarb. Thats why I chose the rochester rebuild kit. This must be a different carb than what came on it.

Re: Help Me Identify My Carb...

Obviously, the original carb was replaced. Which isn't hard to understand on a 30 year old boat motor.
Can't help you with your carb numbers, but you might look at the 83 to 84 Mercarb kit.

Re: Help Me Identify My Carb...

Ok thanks, I'm gonna try and see if I can find a serial number. Is there a standard location for it on the carb?

Thanks
