I have been trying to figure out which specific model engine and outdrive I have. I looked around yesterday and found a lot of scattered numbers. Please help me. Here is what I found

Outdrive tag: Volvo Penta PN# 867900 8616
SN# 724573

Stamped on block top right side: GM 5.7L SGT
Small plaque on mid center of block right side: 0223
Thermostat housing: Volvo Penta 855470
Stamped on block top left near distributor: 14093633 or 14093638.

I did not find any tag or plaque near starter or oil filter. The boat is an '88 Sunrunner 230 weekender

From the block numbers (it's a 38 not a 33) it's a 350 block, the only 350 I see listed for 87 and 88 was the AQ271C. Not sure what drive you have, but a few pictures of the engine, drive, and transom shield would help a lot in positive ID.

That rubber fuel line going to what looks like an automotive carb is a big NO-NO!

+1 On the auto parts, glass in line filter, inline fuel press gauge and I can't see the fuel pump but there is no dump tube.
Show us a pic of the distributor.

Looks like a 280 drive that needs some work, there is a latch spring hanging and the bump stop is missing. Is there any damage to the top cover on the drive?

Its a good thing you guys are telling me about what you see. Its just the way I bought it. I will be changing those things now that it has been noticed.

There is no damage to the cover, I just removed it. My next question was going to be about those springs hanging. Where do they attach to? and where does the bump stop go and what does it look like?

The cover I speak of is the top cover, with the drive not latching down the drive will pop up in reverse and the top cover will strike the transom shield where the bump stop should be located.

Do a search on drive pops up and there should be plenty of threads with pictures and diagrams of the way it should be set up

Re: Help me identify my engine and outdrive

I see the spring hanging under the drive.Don or one of our Volvo Techs will know.
The fuel line must be a metal line from the fuel pump to the carb.
There should also be a smaller clear or yellow plastic hose from the pump to the carb so if the internal diaphram in the pump fails it puts the fuel down the carb instead of in the bilge.

It may be a good idea to remove the filter off the carb and snap some pics of it and the fuel pump.

I have a feeling someone has used a lot of automotive parts on it.
Very dangerous in an enclosed engine compartment and not legal to USCG regulations.

Re: Help me identify my engine and outdrive

It looks like the 280 on my boat too.

I have a pair of different drives on my boat, and after trying to figure it out for a while, I found out it doesn't really matter. The 270, 275,280,290 and sp drives were all really good drives. They have parts which mix and match pretty readily.

As far as the latch mech goes, this is how it works...when the drive hits the bottom of it's travel, the latch catches on the bar across the transom fitting. This holds the drive down when in reverse.

When you tilt up (there is no trim on a 280), there is a worm gear driven shaft which has a foot. This foot moves down and presses a 'pawl' which is just a button kinda thing. The 'pawl' has linkage which goes to the latch mechanism, releasing it so that the latch doesn't fight the drive going up.

Also: The air filter needs to be replaced with a flame arrester and that might be an automotive alternator.

Thank you all for recognizing all of this. I had a feeling some of these parts were automotive. I will snap some more pics and then post. Again, thanks.

Not sure about the carb, it sure does have a lot of vac ports, and the choke is not hooked up.

Don't see any screens in the alt.

The top is missing off the tilt relay box.

The exhaust connector hoses should be double clamped.

Why is that hose tie wrapped to the alt adjusting arm? looks like a good place to rub through.

Everything you see there is just how I bought it. I am aware of a few things already. So I need a marine alt? Should there be a plug or Jose connected at the back of the carb where there is no fitting?

Re: Help me identify my engine and outdrive

Wow didn't see that before, looks like a wide open manifold port. Must be a carb adapter.

Have you had this engine running?

Re: Help me identify my engine and outdrive

You may not need an alternator, most alternators don't have visible screens in them.

From the looks of it, you have a lot of carb problems, mostly due to the previous owner trying to install an automotive carb. The fuel lines, that gauge, carb, adapter plate, all just wrong. Like sqbr, I doubt it will run very well with that open port at the carb base, even if you could get it started.
I would be curious why the fuel pressure gauge was installed. What did they put in for a fuel pump?????

The previous owner did run it after being rebuilt. I have not yet because I have been doing electrical work. I am going to get a manual for that carb.
