Help me locate this coolant leak (Merc. 470)

I have a pretty good coolant leak (about half gallon per hour of runtime) on my 1987 165hp Mercruiser 470. I don't believe it's the camshaft seal as both the seal and the camshaft itself were replaced appx. 20 hours ago. The coolant is pooling in the bilge when running on the water, however there is no leaking at idle, when testing the boat out of the water. The oil appears fine when I test it on the dipstick (not milky at all). It doesn't overheat at all as long as it doesn't run out of coolant. In fact it runs rather cool even when pressing it pretty hard, barely passing 160F or so. The only way I know it's draining out is from the coolant in the bilge and the empty reservoir. Also, the coolant is not being sucked out of the coolant overflow bottle like it should be as it's always full (in my understanding the coolant reservoir shouldnt' be able to empty out without sucking the overflow bottle dry first).

The previous owner did a partial rebuild on it and it's been leaking ever since (a couple of months). He suspects it's the exhaust gasket, but I wanted to get some more opinions before I start tearing it apart. Could this be the head gasket? Would it be pooling in the bilge if it was? I'm trying to track down a pressure tester to see if can help me find the leak and I'll post here with those results if I find one soon.

SOUNDS like the same problem i had. Bad head gasket have someone drive the boat and u watch the motor. If antifreeze comes out of the overflow then u have a gasket issue. Everytime last year i went out i lost a gallon every 2 trips or so. I just put a new head and gasket and the problem went away.

Interesting. So if it's a bad head gasket it will actually force coolant OUT the overflow bottle?

CORRECT. I watched it fill the bottle and the out of the tube on top of the bottle into my bilge.

my boat would run great no probs then if I bring the boat over 3000 rpms the coolant would shoot out and then 5 minutes after i would over heat.

OK, we got a pressure tester and pumped it up to 17psi per the manual. It held this pressure just fine (and for way longer than the 2 minutes listed in the manual). According to the manual this leaves the head gasket amongst the list of possible problem, so I guess we'll be changing that out.

what did you pressure test?
I performed a leakdown tes on all cylinders. I left the radiator cap open. pumped air into number 4 cylinder and there it was bubbling in the coolant.

The coolant system. I hooked up a pump to the coolant tank and pumped it up to 14psi. Doing a leak down on the cylinders is a good idea though, i'll try that this afternoon.

Hmmm.. I only have the tools to do a compression test on the cylinders. How does one do a leakdown on them?

OK, I just decided to yank the head and replace all the gaskets. While I have everything from the block up off what should I check while I'm in there that might also be a cause of the leak? Where would cracks likley form?

OK well you could of uses ur compression testers hose for a leakdown. you connect the air hose to the compression tester hose also make sure the schrader valve is out of the hose. then pump air into a cylinder that is on the compression stroke. then look for air bubbles. If you pulled the head off look at the head gasket look for cracks and breaks on both sides. also use a straight edge to make sure the deck of the block is not warped and the head

Yep, it was the head gasket. We changed it out last Thursday and ran it on the water Thursday afternoon, then saturday and then most of the day today and it hasnt' lost another drop of coolant. I now have a perfectly running Merc470 without a single leak on it!
