I have to replace my engine coupler for my mercriuser 5.7 litre. If i remember correctly i just have to remove the Alpha drive and can replace it that way. While trying to find the coupler in stock at one of the 100s of suppliers and marinas around here the guy told me i would have to order it and it would be worth ordering because i have to pull the motor. Is he just trying to get more repair jobs in or do i actually have to remove the motor to replace a stupid coupler.

Yep, you need to pull the engine as the coupler is bolted onto the flywheel at the back of the engine. Pull the outdrive, and then pull the engine.

Its not that bad you can do in a day or less i got mine from tungsten marine great prices. get some helpers and it wont be too bad. get the lift figured out hoist ,back hoe,etc all the wiring stays on motor. fuel line ,grounds. pull o.d.
remove 4 mounts pull forward or all the way out. will save yourself probably $700.00 or more in labor well worth it.

Howdy,

If you're going to do this job, get the CORRECT Mercury Mercruiser service manual before you start.

It will make it a LOT easier. (Clymer/Seloc won't cut it either)

and btw, you'll need an alignment tool too, or you'll be pulling that engine to replace the coupler again.

If you were doing that job for me I would expect a complete rear end job meaning new gimbal, u joint, and the seals, impeller replaced too. your doing the labor anyway.
