Help me pick a good boat...

...for a family of 6 (kids are 11, 9, 7, and 3).

We just moved to the Resevoir area in Jackson, MS. After riding by the HUGE lake, I got an instant urge to ski (which has never left me after 25 years of NOT skiing). The wife is in agreement and wants a boat too and the kids are excited about it as well.

I think the boat question would be less problematic if we didn't have such a large family. What I am looking for is a boat/engine combo that will have no problems with pulling a ski/wake/knee/tube and a minimum of 5 other people in the boat. I know, that's a lot for a motor to push/pull, but I can't really leave the kids on the land while I have a blast on the water.

So I have never owned a boat and am monitoring craigslist and ebay. I am not paying for a new one, I just don't have that dough, but I can swing $20 - $25 grand. It's not really a brand name thing, although that would be good to know about. Would I need a 23 ft boat and will the V6 put out enough to pull 6 people without sounding like it's struggling? Do I need to go up to the V8? I just don't know what to get.

I think more along the lines of a bowrider which seems ideal, but my wife is thinking deckboat. Something about the deckboat makes me think I will not like it. Anybody use a deckboat for watersports? Seems like an awful lot of boat for a motor to push and at the same time, yank a 200 lb slolum guy out of the water. Any thoughts you have on this will be greatly appreciated. In the end, I feel like I am going to have to buy a huge boat with a huge engine in it, and I just don't want that.

I have also seen on here that Bayliners are good as long as they are not too old. What about Tahoe for this type activity? It will mostly be a function of what I can find for sale by owner, but I don't want to skip over something that is a good boat, and you guys are the ones that know.

Lots of boats out there for under $15g, or even 10G that will fit your needs.

Under 20' --- 4.3l v6.
Over 20' -- v8.

Thanks, it makes sense for V8 > 20ft. That will help narrow down ALOT of boats.

Now I just need to find one for sale.

When looking at a used boat check the exterior of the hull. The keel especially. I don't know what type of ground you have there but here it is rocky. If a boat has been pulled up on a rocky beach it will show on the keel first. Where I used tolive it was mostly sand or mud at the shore so damage to the keel was usually minor if any. Check the trailer. Does it have bunks or rollers.

Bunks are easier to center the boat when loading, rollers are easier on the arms when loading. Check the wiring on the trailer. If it is brittle it will give you problems very soon. Are the lighhts completely submersibel? If they are great if not, at soem point you'forget to unplug them when backing down a ramp=blown lamp or fuse.

Check the seats and interior. If it is cuddy you end up loking at, check the headliner in the cuddy. We looked at one and the whole liner was stained like it had a leak from above. Are the seams of the seats dirty? If they are to me it is sign of "I need to sell it so I will finally get around to cleaning it." On a 20+ plus boat check the swim platform. Is it stained? Around the gas filler neck, is it yellowed from spilled gas? Gas is also hard on gel coat finishes.

Demo some deck boats if you get a chance. Might be surprised at how capable the right one will be.

+1 on the deck boat. Ours is roomy, rides well, and handles good too.
